University of Mary Washington requires all students to pursue broad studies in the arts, the humanities, and the sciences. These studies constitute the General Education component of the college’s academic program and serve as a common academic foundation for all University of Mary Washington students.
The General Education requirements represent a primary objective of liberal learning. In addition, students are required to complete writing and speaking intensive courses which enable them to develop essential skills. Each requirement may be satisfied by a variety of specified courses, many of which also meet General Education and/or major requirements.
