Transfer Credit FAQs
When is the deadline for transfer credits to be received by UMW?
The deadline for transfer credit to be received by the Office of the Registrar for new incoming/Transfer students for each semester is by the end of their first term at UMW. This includes AP, IBO, CLEP, Cambridge, college transfer credit and dual enrollment credit.

How do you find out how your college credits will transfer?
To find what transfers and which may count towards the General Education requirements, view the AP, IBO, CLEP and Cambridge transfer charts. Transfer credit from Virginia Community Colleges System (VCCS) can be viewed on the UMW website under the VCCS guideline page . This chart will show exactly how each course will transfer into UMW. These courses have already been evaluated by all UMW department chairs. Courses not listed here may be re-evaluated, on a case by case basis.
***To see which courses meet the BA/BS/BAEd – NEW Gen Ed requirements and ATC’s (Fall 2020 and on), please refer to our website .
***To See which courses meet the BLS Gen Ed requirements, please review the General Education Course List.
How do you request a re-evaluation of transfer credit?
If you did not receive credit for a course in which you feel it is worthy of UMW credit, you may file a “Request for Re-Evaluation of Transfer Credit” form.
The form must be filled out and submitted along with an attached copy of the course syllabus (NOT course description) from the term the course was taken or the closest term available.
For a course to be evaluated for Gen Ed credit, in addition to the syllabus, the list of requirements for each committee is on the instruction page of the form. There are additional questions that will need to be answered, along with the syllabus for the course, and the UMW Re-evaluation form. Once complete, this should be turned into the Transfer Credit Coordinator, Ms. Patricia Sarkuti in the Registrar’s office, Lee Hall room 206/250 or scanned and emailed to psarkuti@umw.edu.

Additional Information:
- University of Mary Washington has a very stringent transfer policy. Courses that you wish to transfer must closely mirror courses that UMW offers.
- You must have received a grade of “C” (2.0) or higher to transfer a course into UMW.
- Courses taken Pass/Fail or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory do not transfer, unless it is a physical fitness course, not on a graded scale.
- Transfer courses are awarded the same number of credits that are offered at UMW for that course. All students receive full credit for electives (NOTMJ) except for Modern Foreign Languages courses.
- Courses are transferred for credit only; transfer grades are NOT calculated into UMW GPA.
- Transfer credit is awarded only after the original/official transcript has been received from each institution attended. Courses taken in other countries must have an outside company evaluate the credits and convert them into US standards and grades. Example: World Education Services (WES), International Education Evaluations, etc.
- Courses with topics such as study skills, college readiness, college algebra, etc. generally do NOT transfer into UMW for BA/BS/BSEd students.
- Prerequisites are required for some courses. It is the student’s responsibility to provide proof that they took the prerequisite courses, if they were taken at other institutions.
