Search the Letters

The Papers project has identified approximately 38,000 items written by and to Monroe.  To search full text versions of all published transcriptions, please use our Digital Edition. This access contains letters that have been published in Volumes 1 – 7 of the Papers of James Monroe.  Annotations and indices are only available online through Rotunda Press, or through the printed editions of the volumes.

Monroe’s full catalogue of correspondence provides access to entries showing a letter’s author and recipient, date and place of writing, a summary of contents, and repository location of the original.  Search results can be sorted, organized, and exported as needed. Transcriptions of items published in Volumes 1 – 7 of the Monroe Papers are linked to the relevant catalogue entries. Log in information and Frequently Asked Questions are available here.
