UMW Assistance Animal Etiquette
Assistance Animals help ensure nondiscrimination and equal access at UMW by individuals with disabilities. They are working animals. It is okay to interact with the handler/owner of an assistance animal and ask if you may interact with the animal. It is not appropriate to ask for details about the individual’s disability. If you have not been given permission by the handler/owner, do not:
- pet an assistance animal (it may distract the animal from its work)
- feed an assistance animal
- deliberately startle, tease, or taunt an assistance animal
- separate or attempt to separate a handler/owner from his/her assistance animal
