Why UMW Honors?
The benefits of joining this community are myriad, and a lot depends on how much you want to take advantage of the opportunities that are offered. Some of the benefits of being in the program are straightforward and tangible: priority registration that removes the stress of choosing classes and essentially assures your access to the courses you want; support for undertaking a self-designed research or creative capstone project; access to the centrally located Honors Commons as a home base for studying, sharing ideas, or grabbing a cup of coffee.
The Honors Program also offers opportunities for intellectual and personal growth, encouraging your development as a leader and reinforcing the value of community engagement and service. Our field trips, offered at no cost for Honors Scholars, may take us to historical, cultural, geographic, and other sites of importance, innovation, and creation, while programs on campus develop your professional profile, skills, and presentation, open connections to visiting and UMW scholars, or foster relaxation and self care for a balanced lifestyle. Some Honors students also take advantage of our memberships in the National and Virginia Collegiate Honors Councils, traveling with Honors Program staff for presentations and sessions.
