How does the Public Square Debate work?

Using a light parliamentary style, participants will discuss a resolution practicing civil discourse and a respectful exchange of ideas. This Public Square Debate helps us celebrate the 250 anniversary of American Independence and Virginia’s central role in American history.

We will discuss the following topic, “Social media is a threat to democracy.” To start us off, two people will present prepared statements supporting the statement, and two opposing it. As a participant, there is no need to prepare anything in advance. Members of the audience are invited to ask questions, and to volunteer to stand up and present brief statements in support or opposition, after the first four speakers talk.

Students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, and community members are invited to participate in this free event. The debate should last about one hour and will be facilitated by a professional facilitator from the College Debates and Discourse Alliance. After the first hour, there will be an opportunity to socialize in the second hour and light refreshments will be served.
