Register to Vote at Your Home Address
Many students wish to register at their parent’s home address and drive home on election day to vote. In order to register online, it is best to have a Virginia DMV-issued identification card (driver’s license or ID card) so your signature will be on file. To register to vote at your parent’s home address, visit the Virginia Department of Elections and follow the prompts to submit your online voter registration, using your parent’s home address as your mailing address and your residence address.
Register to Vote at Your On-Campus Address
Some students prefer to register at their on-campus address. To register online or in person, you will need to know your Residence Address and your Mailing Address. You can find this information by viewing this sample voter registration form.
Residence Address: If you are living in University housing (residence halls, Eagle Landing, or U. Apts.) your residence address is 1301 College Ave., Fredericksburg VA 22401. You vote in Ward 2.
Mailing Address: Because you live on a campus, your mailing address is different from your residence address. Your mailing address is your UMW Box – For example, it could be 1701 College Ave., UMW Box 1234, Fredericksburg VA 22401.
While you can still use the online form to register to vote (if you have a Virginia DMV-issued identification card), you will have to enter something different for your Residence Address and Mailing Address.
Register to Vote at Your Off-Campus Address
If you live in a house or apartment off-campus as a UMW student, you can register to vote at that address. In order to register online, you must have a Virginia DMV-issued identification card (driver’s license or ID card) so your signature will be on file. To register to vote, visit the Virginia Department of Elections and follow the prompts to submit your online voter registration, using your off-campus address.
