Defining Student Type Classes
“C” – Continuing Student (STUSTAT = 3)
- Student who is enrolled at the same institution for subsequent semesters at the same student level group (undergraduate or graduate).
- As long as a student stays active in Banner even if they take a semester off, they remain a continuing student if they do not have to reapply to the university.
- Even if a student takes a course at another institution, they will remain continuing as long as they stay active in our system.
- Student who has graduated with a bachelor’s degree and continues to take courses at the undergraduate level within the same institution (would be Continuing if they don’t have to reapply).
“F” – First-time Student (STUSTAT = 1)
- First time at a specific level; undergraduate or graduate level.
- Exception – students who dual enrolled during high school (are coming over with advanced standing/college credits).
- Exception – students who took college courses in the summer term immediately after graduating high school prior to enrolling in the fall term at an institution.
- Student does not have any previous college experience at the student level for which the application was submitted.
“P” – New to Program Student (STUSTAT = 5)
- Student who comes to an institution and begins as a non-degree seeking student and then becomes a degree seeking student (would be New to Program).
- Student who has graduated with a bachelor’s degree or higher and comes back to obtain a second bachelor’s degree (would be New to Program).
- Exception – student who has graduated with a bachelor’s degree and continues to take courses at the undergraduate level within the same institution (would be either a Continuing or Readmit student type).
“R” – Readmit Student (STUSTAT = 4)
- Student who stopped out of an institution and had to apply for admissions to re-enroll.
- If a student begins at one institution and leaves for another but comes back and has to reapply for admissions, they are a readmit not a transfer.
- Student who has graduated with a bachelor’s degree and continues to take courses at the undergraduate level within the same institution (would be Readmit if they do have to reapply).
“S” – Summer First-time Undergraduate Student (STUSTAT = 3)
- Student who is first-time in the summer is considered a first-time student in the following fall (STUSTAT = 1).
“T” – Transfer Student (STUSTAT = 2)
- Student who transfers from one institution to another institution within the same student level group (undergraduate or graduate).
- Exception – if a student leaves UMW and becomes inactive in Banner and they take credits at another postsecondary institution and then reapplies for admissions at UMW (would be a Readmit).
*A student can only be coded as first-time OR transfer once at a given student level (UG/GR) at an institution.
