Pre-Assigning Zoom Breakout Rooms

Breakout rooms are very useful tool for small-group discussion or project work within a class period, but they can be complicated to set up in the middle of a Zoom meeting. It is possible to pre-assign students to breakout rooms beforehand, but you and your students will need to do a little work in advance. Prepping Your Students For pre-assignments to work, students will need to create, and be logged into, their UMW Zoom account before joining the meeting. Note that logging into Canvas does not automatically log your students into their Zoom account. Creating and Logging into Your UMW Zoom Account

All UMW faculty, staff, and students can create a licensed Zoom account tied to their UMW email address. This account will allow users to host meetings beyond the 40 minute limit imposed on free accounts, and allow access to other useful paid features. A UMW Zoom account is also required for pre-assignment of breakout rooms. Creating Your UMW Zoom Account To create your UMW Zoom account, you will need to log in via the UMW Zoom Web Portal. On this page, simply click "Sign In" and then log in with your UMW NetID and password. Logging into Your UMW Zoom Account When joining a Zoom meeting, you may be prompted to log into your UMW account. You can do so via the above method for "Creating you UMW Zoom Account." Checking Attendance in Zoom

If you are using the Zoom integration in Canvas, you can very easily see an attendance record by going to the "Previous Meetings" tab and clicking the "Report" link next to the meeting. This will show you a list of Zoom users in attendance, along with how long they were in the meeting. ​ If you are using Zoom outside of Canvas, you can access these reports from the UMW Zoom Web Portal. Zoombombing: Prevention and Response

Zoombombing (or Zoom raiding) is an unwanted, disruptive intrusion, generally by Internet trolls and hackers, into a video conference call. This guide includes information on preventing zoombombing, as well as tips on how to respond if a zoombomber does gain entry into your Zoom meeting. Standard Protections at UMW UMW IT has put a number of security measures in place in your UMW Zoom account's default settings. These settings have been chosen to strike a balance between security and ease of access, and will protect you from most instances of potential zoombombing. Instructors can use Zoom from within their Canvas courses to schedule recurring virtual class meetings, record class sessions, and generate captions and transcripts for videos recorded in Zoom.
