FSEM 100W4 | Theatre and Spectacle

THIS COURSE HAS CURRENTLY FILLED FOR FALL 2025.

What makes something visually stunning? Is it the thrill of chasing something bigger and better, or is it the experience of something small and relatable?

In this course, we’ll explore the evolving relationship between theatre and spectacle, tracing the ways in which visual storytelling has been shaped by cultural shifts over time. From the grandeur of Broadway musicals and immersive experiences to the high-tech wonders of modern film, this class will look at how we seek entertainment and the role that the visual world plays in drawing audiences in.

Throughout the semester, we’ll examine everything from the rise of visual effects, the influence of mass media, through how technology has expanded the boundaries of what we consider “theatrical.” Through studying a diverse mix of traditional performance, immersive theatre, performance art, themed entertainment, and cinematic influences, students will gain insight into the visual choices that make theatre a powerful, ever-evolving form of social expression.

I’ve always been interested how the visual world complement the stories that we tell. I’ve been involved with theatre for my entire life, and spent many years studying the art of animation. I often had thought of those as two separate interests, but as I got older, I encountered the world of theatre design and fell in love with how artists make choices to create visually expressive worlds onstage.

Because my background is an intersection of theatre, film, and the art world, I’m incredibly interested in how they work together to influence the art of visual storytelling. You can often find me on campus designing, building, and/or painting one of the UMW Theatre productions, but in my spare time I love to play with clay at Liberty Town Arts or jog around the beautiful city of Fredericksburg with one of my insanely cute dogs. I run on memes, coffee, and pop culture references... and I’m always looking for a new show or book recommendation!
