FSEM 100J2 | Creating Arts and Ideas

THIS COURSE HAS CURRENTLY FILLED FOR FALL 2025.

This course provides a unique perspective through the lens of artists and their historical utilization of sketchbooks. Delving into the art world, we will deconstruct and discover the intricacies of artistic expression through lively discussions and personal interpretations in writing and artmaking, exploring the fascinating realm of artists and their sketchbooks.

Throughout the course, we will examine the myriad ways artists have used sketchbooks to create and catalog their observations of the world, unraveling how artists transform their sketchbooks into laboratories for idea generation and concept development.

Students will use their sketchbooks as individual outlets for creativity and as journals for researching artists from the Renaissance to Contemporary Art, fostering a deeper understanding of the historical context and diverse influences shaping artistic evolution.

In the university art studio, we’ll create projects by employing drawing, watercolor, and collage techniques, thereby contributing to the exploration of the historical and contemporary significance of the sketchbook in the artist’s journey.

In addition to these explorations, the class will embark on discovering valuable resources on campus such as the Speaking and Writing center and other helpful support organizations which will enhance their ability to navigate their academic endeavors. This holistic approach aims to empower students not only in their creative expression but also in their research skills and utilization of campus resources.

At UMW, I teach sections of Painting I-II, Drawing I-II and Topics courses in Drawing and Painting as well as this FSEM course. I earned an M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in New York and a BA in studio art from the University of Texas at Austin. My work is focused on painting in oil and acrylic and drawing in conventional media as well as mixed media with paint pen on multiple layers of plexiglass. My work has been exhibited throughout the United States, and my aim is to provide opportunities for deeply emotional, even physical, conversation with viewers, allowing them to conjure their own creative acts and satisfactions.
