FSEM 100P6 | Science and Technology :Because We Can, Should We?

Science is a discipline about discovery and pushing the boundaries of our understanding. With science and technology come great advances—cloning, nuclear power, and chemotherapeutics, as well as a large price to pay—eugenics, climate change, and drug-resistant pathogens. During the 20th and 21st centuries scientists operated under the mantra “We can therefore we do,” but is that appropriate? Is science going too far? Is it pushing the boundaries of what should be done by what can be done? This FSEM will examine some of the greatest scientific advances in the last 50 years, the impacts they had on society, and the cost of these advancements. Individually and as a group we will critically examine the impact of past advances (as well as future potential advances), examine information from multiple disciplines to fully understand the ramifications of each advancement, and utilize both written and oral discourse on these sometimes highly controversial topics.

While each student will research, analyze, and present a scientific advancement and future breakthrough of their choice, the course will start with a reading of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks as a good introduction of examining scientific advancements through many lenses and in the context of the historical time period in which they occurred as well as the current-day ramifications.

This FSEM counts as an Honors-designated class.

In college I took a course called "The Darwin Era," and it was this course that brought sharply into focus my love of examining science in social, cultural, and ethical contexts. This course left me with the realization that advances that we read about in textbooks or in news articles did not happen in a vacuum and that the scientists making them were not just experiencing the joy of scientific discovery, but a host of other pressures, both positive and negative, from the world in which they lived. As I have charted my course as a scientist, I have experienced first-hand the internal and external influences on what I have accomplished and who I have become. Taking opportunities to examine not only what we are capable of but if we should ever push the scientific boundaries has made me more aware of my impact as a scientist on the world and the importance of always considering the ramifications of scientific research.

I started researching cancer cells in the lab long before I thought to ask a simple question: “Where did these cells come from?” I later learned that the Jurkat T Lymphocytes (a type of cancer cells) I was studying came from a 14-year old leukemia patient. This revelation later led me to learn about HeLa cells and where they came from. Now I get to share this amazing story with students as we read the book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and explore the ethics behind the world of scientific discovery. As a scientist who has spent my career studying the death of cancer cells, the opportunity to discuss the societal ramifications of what science can do versus what it should do is invaluable. It has helped shape me into who I am today and I hope this FSEM can do the same for the students who take it.
