May Teaching and Learning Days are held between Commencement and the beginning of summer break. During these days, faculty work is highlighted and celebrated as well as shared with colleagues to spark new ideas for the next academic year. May Teaching and Learning Days also provide space and time for more in-depth course design discussions and revisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May 2026 Teaching & Learning Days Schedule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Registration is now open for all May 2026 Teaching and Learning events. The Teaching and Learning registration form<\/a> will close on Friday, May 7th at 5:00 pm. If events fill due to reaching seating capacity, the website will be updated to show a closed session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuesday, May 12th<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Writing Retreat, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm in Seacobeck Hall<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Get a jump on your summer writing plans (or finish your FAAR) at the Writing Retreat on May 12th from 9:00 AM \u2013 3:00 PM in Seacobeck Hall. ALL WRITERS ARE WELCOME! Spaces will be available for individual and team writing, as well a social space in the Dome Room with an all-day beverage and snack station. Attend for any portion of the day\u2013and, of course, bring a friend who always says they need to write but never finds the time. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No Time to Read, More than Words<\/em> (Chapters 10-12), 1:00 – 2:00 pm in Seacobeck 128<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

We continue our reading (or not) of More than Words by breaking into Part III, chapters 10-12 where we explore reading, writing, robots, and what writing is now and will be in the future (at least in our classrooms). If you haven’t joined us before but this all sounds intriguing, come in and see what your colleagues think about the intersection of writing and AI.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Digital Learning Support is hosting an in-person open lab session where faculty can receive drop-in assistance using Panorama in Canvas, as well as help with other digital accessibility questions and tools.  Bring your computer if you can, or use one of ours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognizing and Responding to Distressed Students (Chad Sims, Director-Talley Center for Counseling Services)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

This presentation provides an overview of current mental health trends among college students, including patterns observed at TCCS. Participants will gain insight into how these trends show up in student behavior and experiences. The session also equips attendees with practical strategies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Pedagogy Playground: Playful Learning (Elizabeth Johnson-Young, Associate Director-Center for Teaching)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Come learn about the joyful side of colleagues’ classrooms at this year\u2019s Pedagogy Playground! This year\u2019s Pedagogy Playground is focused on playful moments. Faculty presenters will share the games, simulations, and tactile activities that make their classrooms and learning FUN. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you missed last year\u2019s playground, this session is not a traditional “presentation.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • The Setup:<\/strong> 5-6 tables, each hosted by a faculty member. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    • The Rotation:<\/strong> Attendees visit tables for 10\u201312 minute bursts. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      • The Plan:<\/strong> Presenters share their activities and engage in quick, relaxed dialogue. Then, the timer dings, and you move to a new table. The objective is to learn a few new strategies and to have FUN. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

        Let’s Reflect: Some Practical Advice for Assigning and Getting Meaningful Reflections (Leah Schweitzer, Director-Speaking & Writing Center)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

        Metacognitive activities which ask student to reflect on what has been learned, how it was learned, and how what was learned will be used in the future are key to students retaining information; solidifying skill sets; and ascribing purpose, meaning, and even some joy to course content. But, reflection is a writing genre which students have likely had little exposure to and it can be difficult to teach\/coach them to write a strong, meaningful one. This workshop will provide you with classroom activities as well as some sample assignments that will make it easier for you to incorporate written reflection into your syllabus and get responses from students that you\u2019ll enjoy reading.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

        In this interactive session, we will explore what life as a faculty member looks and feels like when you are fully thriving and explore challenges that sometimes get in the way. Dr. Jennie S. Knight, Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Founding Director of the Center for Faculty Wellbeing and Development at the University of Virginia, will lead participants through a process of appreciative inquiry to map the possibilities for faculty wellbeing at Mary Wash and will share professional insights.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

        Digital Learning Support invites you to celebrate the end of the academic year with a lively and fast-paced hour of five-minute presentations, where faculty and staff share innovative ideas, creative projects, and effective teaching techniques they explored this year. And since we all know how difficult it can be for some of us to limit ourselves to five minutes, we\u2019ll have a gong available to remind presenters that their time is up! It\u2019s a fun, informal way to celebrate the end of the semester, spark inspiration, and connect with colleagues.         Join us as we introduce the Braver Angels model of debate. Whether you attended UMW’s Public Square Debate or not, this is an opportunity to learn more about the Braver Angels model, engage in a mini-debate, and learn more about how faculty can incorporate the model into a diversity of classrooms. We will be joined by experts in the model and enjoy breakfast together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

        SI faculty (current and interested) are invited to a lunch with fellow SI colleagues to revisit SI program expectations, discuss common misconceptions about oral communication and SI requirements, and review our current SI assessment rubrics. Attendees are asked to bring their course ideas and materials to add to the discussion on how we approach SI learning objectives and assessment goals in our courses, especially considering our student body, professional development goals, and current trends in society.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
