NOTE: Small Teaching Grants have been suspended for the Fall 2020 semester.
What are Small Teaching Grants?
Small Teaching Grants support faculty teaching projects leading to transformative learning experiences using evidence-based teaching practices. These grants support ‘small teaching’ steps towards purposeful, sustainable teaching and learning design. Be creative and think about how you can take learning to a new level! Grants may also support Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) projects conducted in your classroom.
How much funding do Small Teaching Grants provide?
The Center for Teaching awards $500 grants each fall and spring.
How can Small Teaching Grant funds be spent?
Small Teaching Grant funds may support material/resource purchases (e.g. books, teaching materials, equipment, transcription services, etc.) or a stipend for the faculty member (note: stipends are taxed). If a faculty team submits a grant application and elects to receive stipends, the funds will be split among the team members.
Small Teaching Grant funds may not be used for student salaries or stipends, food/catering purchases, or travel expenses.
What is the application review process?
The Teaching Center Advisory Committee selects applications for funding.
Preference will be given to applicants who have not been awarded a Small Teaching Grant within the past year. Applications with clear alignment to one of the UMW Strategic Vision elements and specific statements about potential impact on student learning will be given priority consideration.
Small Teaching Grants have been suspended for the Fall 2020 semester.
How do I apply for a Small Teaching Grant?
Complete the Small Teaching Grant application (via Qualtrics) by the deadline for your proposed project semester.
Center for Teaching staff will email acknowledgement of your application, including a PDF file for your records.
We recommend drafting and saving grant application responses before submitting via Qualtrics. A Word version of the Small Teaching Grant application is available for preview and drafting purposes.
NOTE: Only applications submitted via Qualtrics will be accepted for review by the committee!
Are there any conditions for receiving a Small Teaching Grant?
Small Teaching Grant recipients are asked to share their experiences with the larger university community. Center for Teaching staff will work with grant recipients to determine an appropriate forum for their work. Possible opportunities include:
- presentation to faculty and staff (e.g. Faculty Pedagogy Colloquium, Teaching Talk, etc.)
- creation of a resource for the UMW community (e.g. Center for Teaching email tip, Teaching Guides, new faculty resources, etc.)
