FSEM Advising Notes Reminder

A reminder that we are all expected to keep advising notes for our first-year students. A detailed advising note in an essential piece of the mid-semester advising process, particularly for our undeclared students as they more than likely will move to another advisor in the future.  Notes provide a record of academic progress, major declaration plans, and the intended courses for the upcoming semester.  Notes not only serve as a guide for future advising, but they also provide documentation should a student or parent question advising recommendations in the future. Advising notes can be short and to the point.  Below is an example of a brief note entered into EAB Campus following a routine advising meeting. Sam and I met for Spring 2019 advising on 10/24/18.  Sam plans to declare as a Psychology major in May, but is also considering Sociology.  We discussed the following courses for the spring semester:  PSYC-100 CHEM-105 HIST-131 STAT-180 THEA-111 **If … [Read more...]

House Calls for First-Year Students

Attached below is an email from residence life about the House Calls program that will be held at 7 pm on Sunday, October 7th. I hope you will consider taking part in this great program that helps our first-year students get to know faculty and staff. You can contact Noura Allen, Assistant Director of Residence Life and Housing and copied here, with any questions. Greetings!  The semester is underway and we hope that your 2018-2019 academic year is off to a good start!  Each year the Office of Residence Life and Housing works with Faculty and Staff, like you, to help our new First Year students get off to a good start as well.  Every fall our office runs a program in the first year halls called, House Calls. This is a program that allows students to interact with faculty and staff and to get to know the university through personal interactions.  I am writing to invite you to participate with our upcoming program, which intentionally exposes residents to faculty and staff members by … [Read more...]

Student Poll in EAB Guide

Please ask your FSEM students to log in to Guide, go into their Path, and complete the new poll. It will take just a minute and could win your class an end-of-semester party! Rationale & Details: The poll for first-year students is just three questions to find out how they think they are doing academically, how prepared they are for spring advising and registration, and if they feel they have had a strong support network on campus. The poll is currently live in the app, and we would like students to complete it before they leave for fall break. Tim O’Donnell and I will go over the results this weekend and will share the results with you, the FSEM instructors and advisors, both in aggregate and for individual cases where we might want to intervene. Please ask your FSEM students to complete the poll—mention it in class and/or send out a reminder. It will take only a minute and should give us some very helpful information. As an incentive, the FSEM class with the highest … [Read more...]

FSEM Week 2: New Announcements

Since my weekly email went out a little early this week, I missed the chance to include two items: PASS Open House - There will be a PASS (Peer-Assisted Study Sessions) open house on Wednesday, September 6th, at 6pm in Trinkle 204 to introduce the PASS program to interested students. There will be ICE CREAM and PASS leaders in attendance. There are PASS sessions for Physics, Chemistry, and Math—a great program for our first-year students. A flyer is attached. I will include the full PASS schedule in the dropbox under “Academic Support Centers” later this week. The Race & Revolution FSEMs are sponsoring a concert by Gaye Adegbalola on September 21st at 7pm in the Digital Auditorium (HCC). The concert, Civil Rights and the Blues, was a big hit with students last year, and is open to all students and faculty. This would be a great event for your peer mentors to plan with your students. … [Read more...]

Upcoming Advising

I wanted to touch base with you before the upcoming advising sessions you’ll be having with the first-year students. You should have received emails from the Registrar’s Office for any advisee who received a mid-semester U in any of their courses. I encourage you to bring this up at your meetings and point students to the proper resources to help them succeed. If you are really concerned about a student and not getting through, please contact Academic Services for follow up. Please note that first-year students have the opportunity to declare their major at the end of their first year at UMW. Please discuss potential major options when you see your advisees. In addition, you will need to decide whether you will keep your first-year advisees for sophomore year, should they not declare. Additional information on reporting this information will be sent by Wes Hillyard following spring break. Important dates regarding major declaration: Please encourage students to attend the … [Read more...]

December 14 FSEM Debrief

Had any challenges teaching FSEM this fall? Join us for an FSEM debriefing session. Wednesday, December 14, 2016 3 – 5 pm in room 111 of the HCC Light refreshments provided. I will share some preliminary data from the student survey, and we’ll talk about what worked and, of course, what didn’t work this fall (while it’s all still fresh in your head). If you had some struggles, please come share them. If your class was just plain perfect, then please, please, please come share your wisdom.   … [Read more...]

Pasting Links from Webmail

I sincerely appreciate your efforts at getting the information out about the various workshops happening around campus.  I’ve noticed that many of you have posted announcements about the workshops in your Canvas courses, and others have told me about making announcements in class.  This is great!  [Side note:  The Speaking Center had 18 students at their “speaking anxiety” workshop last week.  Typical attendance at these things is less than 5.] I wanted to point out that the same problem that occurred with the PRCA-24 link in the Communication Apprehension module is also occurring when you paste my emails with the hyperlinks as announcements in Canvas. If you cut-n-paste a hyperlink from webmail, it copies the link as though you want to enter the address through webmail. So, rather than just the link you want, you’ll get something like: https://owa.umw.edu/owa/...[blah, blah, blah]…URL=http%3a%2f%2facademics.umw.edu%2facademicandcareerservices%2ffocus-seminars%2f When your … [Read more...]
