Jefferson’s list of books sold to Monroe in 1784 (Library of Congress)<\/p><\/div>\n

Monroe’s earliest recorded purchase is a collection of books acquired from Thomas Jefferson in 1784<\/a>.\u00a0 Monroe had previously read law under Jefferson in 1778, and the two men were serving as delegates to the 1783 session of the Continental Congress in Annapolis.\u00a0 They had also been rooming together at a nearby lodging house.\u00a0 At the end of the session, Monroe purchased a collection of 24 disparate titles, with topics ranging from history to medicine, legal philosophy to dramatic literature, religion to chess.\u00a0 Notable within this grouping were two particular works that stayed with him for the remainder of his life: Emmerich Vattel’s Law of Nations<\/em>, a cornerstone of American foreign policy from the country’s earliest days, and William Blackstone’s\u00a0Commentaries on the English Law<\/em>, which is also listed in the 1849 auction of the remainder of Monroe’s library.<\/p>\n

Excerpt of Monroe’s record of books purchased while in Paris, Madrid, London, and New York from 1803 – 1807Monroe’s next documented acquisitions came during his years as a diplomat to France, Spain, and England, from 1803 – 1807. In a list recorded in his travel journal, Monroe noted 90 titles<\/a> that he added to his library from cities such as Paris and London, and from New York upon his return to the United States.\u00a0 He acquired books from all categories – science, religion, history, literature, the arts – and in several languages.\u00a0 He sought out numerous texts on science, including an 11-volume set of Fourcroy’s notable work on chemistry, and many others.\u00a0 Several of his purchases were made with his daughters in mind, such as a trigesimo-secundo (3.5 x 5.5 inches) copy of Homer’s Illiad<\/em> and a side by side French\/English translation of The Adventures of Telemachus<\/em> for his daughter Maria.<\/p>\n

Monroe’s most active period of acquisition came during his terms as secretary of state and president. He purchased many books that would have served as resources for both foreign and domestic concerns, as well as to the ongoing development of policy decisions.\u00a0 \u00a0It is also during this period that he completed the acquisition of several extensive multi-volume sets, to include 46 volumes of the British Statutes at Large<\/em>, 30 volumes of Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle<\/em>, and 30 volumes of the “highly illustrated” complete collection of the works of Voltaire.<\/p>\n

Monroe fully expected to retire from public service following his return from his second diplomatic posting in 1807.\u00a0 Nearly two decades later, having held more public offices than any other president, he settled into retirement on his farm in Virginia.\u00a0 He noted in 1827 that “The arrangment of my papers, relating to such occurrences, from very early life, occupies a portion of my time. My books, another portion, my farm the residue…<\/em>” (James Monroe to Charles Ingersoll, 25 April 1827).\u00a0 The titles that occupied his time are in keeping with his previous interests of classical and modern history, political philosophy, and the sciences.\u00a0 His involvement in the early efforts of the founding of the country over which he had presided as a two term president is seen not only in the acquisition of such titles as “The Biography of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence,” but in his choice to display a framed copy of the Declaration of Independence in his library at Oak Hill, along with a sword and a brace of pistols.<\/p>\n

the days of his participation as a young man in the revolutionary activities in Williamsburg in 1775 to his final appearance in the civic arena as president of the Virginia constitutional convention in 1829, James Monroe led a life of public service. \u00a0He was an officer in the Continental army, a member of the Continental Congress, a delegate to the Virginia ratifying convention in 1788, and a member of the United State Senate.\u00a0 He served three terms in the Virginia House of Delegates and was four times elected governor of Virginia.\u00a0 He held two appointments as minister to France, was minister to Great Britain, and special envoy to Spain.\u00a0 Monroe served as secretary of state, secretary of war, and was twice elected to the presidency.<\/p>\n<p>During this long and varied career Monroe participated in some of the foremost events of the era\u2014the American Revolution, the debate on the ratification of the Constitution, the suppression of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/aia\/part3\/3p1576.html\">Virginia slave conspiracy of 1800<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/rr\/program\/bib\/ourdocs\/Louisiana.html\">Louisiana Purchase<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/rr\/program\/bib\/1812\/\">War of 1812<\/a>, the acquisition of Florida, the expansion of the United States into the west, the recognition of the independence of the new South American republics, and the writing of the <a href=\"http:\/\/millercenter.org\/president\/speeches\/speech-3604\">Monroe Doctrine<\/a>.\u00a0 He served as minister to France during the French Revolution, as minister to Great Britain during the tempestuous years of Jefferson’s second administration, and as head of the State Department and the War Department during the War of 1812.\u00a0 An important facet of his presidency was that it occurred at a time of historical transition: his eight-year term marked the closing years of the early republic and witnessed the beginning of the age of Jackson.\u00a0 Among the important events of Monroe’s presidency were the strengthening of the nation’s borders in the wake of the War of 1812, the first major economic depression since the Revolution, the admission of five states to the union (highlighted by the great <a href=\"http:\/\/memory.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/ampage?collId=llsl&fileName=003\/llsl003.db&recNum=586\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controversy over Missouri<\/a>) and the organization of two new federal territories, the debate over U. S. support for the South American revolutionaries, the emergence of the second party system and, of course, the promulgation of what came to be called the Monroe Doctrine.<\/p>\n<p>Monroe’s public career is justifiably the focal point of his life, but his private affairs were equally diverse and interesting.\u00a0 He was a <a href=\"http:\/\/jamesmonroemuseum.umw.edu\/\">practicing attorney (<\/a>including a term as Commonwealth attorney at Fredericksburg), owned several farms (most notably <a href=\"http:\/\/ashlawnhighland.org\/\">Highland<\/a> in Albemarle County and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/nr\/travel\/presidents\/monroe_oak_hill.html\">Oak Hill<\/a> in Loudoun County), took a deep interest in education (he was elected to fill Thomas Jefferson’s place on the board of visitors of the University of Virginia after Jefferson’s death), and was patriarch to a diverse and extended family that included his children and their families, his brothers and sisters and their families, children of friends, slaves, employees, and other dependents.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Having long served my country, with integrity and zeal, I cherish retirment, and derive much consolation from a review of the past, especially as our success, under all the difficulties to which we have been exposed, furnishes good ground, on which to calculate, on its continuance.\u00a0 I trust that we shall not only continue, to be free and happy, but to present an example, which will be useful to other nations<\/strong>. and they are determin\u2019d to stay in the City if possible.\u00a0 So of course the fort is a capital object.\u00a0 39 transports w<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><sup>h<\/sup><\/span> sail\u2019d from New York the beginning of this month have arrivd and join\u2019d the rest of the fleet.\u00a0 It is also said they are landing men on the Jersey Shore, we suppose to act under Cornwallis.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>The army under Gates<sup>4<\/sup> have not arriv\u2019d yet.\u00a0 It is s<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><sup>d<\/sup><\/span> they are on their way and that shortly they will be down: when a report first prevail\u2019d that Clinton<sup>5<\/sup> intended sending a part of his army from York the Gen<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><sup>l<\/sup><\/span> in order to divert them order\u2019d two Brigades down to the White Plains; this tho\u2019 the view prov\u2019d abortive retarded their march. Gen<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><sup>l<\/sup><\/span> Burgoyne\u2019s army we are told diminishes fast; they desert in numbers, to such an excess that out of several companies not one man remains.\u00a0 This information seems tollerably well authenticated.\u00a0 We often receive papers from the City w<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><sup>h<\/sup><\/span> are replete with falsity and codswill.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>Lately the attention of our Gen<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><sup>l<\/sup><\/span> Officers has been much taken up with trying each other.\u00a0 Sullivan,<sup>6<\/sup> Wayne,<sup>7<\/sup> Maxwell<sup>8<\/sup> and Stevens<sup>9<\/sup> have been severally call\u2019d on to vindicate their Conduct.\u00a0 To[day] the Commander in Chief approv\u2019d the Sentence of a Gen<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><sup>l<\/sup><\/span> Court Martial, by which major Gen<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><sup>l<\/sup><\/span> Stevens was discharg\u2019d the army.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>The Campaign to me has been a very expensive one.\u00a0 If you find it requisite tho\u2019 a journey to Virginia will be (in point of expense) almost ruinous I will come immediately and settle with the Regiment.\u00a0 The army is to me infinitely more disagreeable than ever.\u00a0 I most sincerely wish that Officers of reputation wo<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><sup>d<\/sup><\/span> continue in the service.\u00a0 The principles on which the war is carried on now is intirely different from what it was at first.\u00a0 Patriotism, publick spirit and disinterestedness have almost vanis\u2019d;
