The Papers of James Monroe is a historical research and publishing project sponsored by the University of Mary Washington and administered under the James Monroe Museum.<\/p>\n

Our mission is to expand access to the correspondence and other public and private papers of James Monroe, fifth president of the United States.<\/p>\n

We collect, transcribe, annotate, and publish selected documents bearing on Monroe’s life and legacy as a foundation for further humanities scholarship, public history interpretation, patriotic education, and general historical literacy.<\/p>\n

The Papers of James Monroe<\/em> documentary edition is published in print in a series of ten volumes issued by Bloomsbury Academic<\/strong><\/a> and online in a digital edition produced by Rotunda<\/strong><\/a>, the digital imprint of the University of Virginia Press. Seven volumes have been completed to date.<\/p>\n

Our work is funded primarily by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as well as by the University of Mary Washington and the James Monroe Museum. We’ve also received support from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), the Stewart Jones Charitable Trust, the Paul and Jane Jones Trust, the Friends of the James Monroe Museum, and individual donors.<\/p>\n
