Honors Program Goals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Upon successful completion of the Honors Program requirements, students earning University Honors will be able to: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Employ Self-Directed Learning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Students will take initiative in setting personal learning goals, identifying resources and opportunities, managing their time effectively, and monitoring their progress. They will independently pursue academic and personal opportunities, demonstrating responsibility and motivation in their learning journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Cultivate Lifelong Learning Skills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Students should develop habits of continuous learning, including curiosity, adaptability, resilience, and a commitment to staying informed and educated throughout their lives, both professionally and personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Recognize Interdisciplinary Connections<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Students should identify and integrate knowledge, methods, and perspectives from multiple disciplines to better understand complex issues, generate innovative solutions, and approach problems holistically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All proposals should be submitted in the Canvas Workspace, meticulously following the posted guidelines. The proposals are reviewed by the Honors Faculty Advisory Committee, which may ask for proposal revisions before approval. Revisions are requested within 48 hours of receipt of proposal review (available by email and on Canvas).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>There are two primary options for completion of a Capstone Project for University Honors.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Option 1:<\/em><\/strong><em> Completion of a departmental project in a student\u2019s major or minor. Departments will oversee these projects, perform the evaluation, and provide project advising. This project could also fulfill a major or minor requirement or could lead to departmental honors.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Option 2:<\/em><\/strong><em> Completion of an interdisciplinary project. These projects will be advised by appropriate faculty. This option is intended for those students whose goals do not neatly fit the requirements of their major department(s), but who intend to complete a rigorous capstone research or creative experience.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hn-capstone-project-faqs\">HN Capstone Project FAQs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Capstone Project by UMW faculty.  If you have a question that is not represented here, please feel free to reach out to the <a href=\"https:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/honorsprogram\/community\/program-staff\/\">Honors Program Staff<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"umw-accordion-container umw-custom-block\" data-only-one=\"true\">\n<div class=\"umw-collapsible-section umw-custom-block\"><div class=\"accordion__question\" data-js-question=\"true\"><button class=\"accordion__question__trigger\" data-js-trigger=\"true\">What should an Honors Capstone Project look like?<\/button><div class=\"accordion__question__answer\">\n<p>Honors Capstone Project design can vary widely between disciplines.  Past projects have included major research papers; laboratory studies; theatrical or musical performances paired with research, journaling, website creation, etc.; creative writing or visual arts portfolios; computer programming projects; and more.  Because a 3-credit Capstone Project equates to ~9 hours of work per week by the student, the student and advisor should ensure that the proposed project is substantial enough to demand this level of work.  Moreover, <strong>all projects, <\/strong>regardless of discipline, must culminate in a public presentation of some sort (e.g., presentation at the Fall Honors Symposium, Spring Research and Creativity Day, or a departmental symposium; public musical or dramatic performance; etc.).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"umw-collapsible-section umw-custom-block\"><div class=\"accordion__question\" data-js-question=\"true\"><button class=\"accordion__question__trigger\" data-js-trigger=\"true\">Are syllabi required for Honors Capstone Projects?<\/button><div class=\"accordion__question__answer\">\n<p>The Honors Program does not have specific syllabus requirements for Capstone Projects, and faculty are not required to submit syllabi to the Honors Program.  However, faculty should be aware that Section 5.4.6 of the Faculty Handbook (\u201cCourse Plans and Syllabus\u201d) states the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFaculty should provide students with a course syllabus containing, at a minimum, the following: (a) instructor identification and contact information; (b) course identification; (c) course goals and objectives; (d) student learning outcomes, including (when applicable) general education learning outcomes; (e) required materials (textbooks, lab manuals, etc.); (f) course calendar (assignment due dates, tests, etc.); (g) guidelines for class participation; (h) basis for determining final grades and mid-semester progress reports (in undergraduate courses, where required); (i) accessibility statement; (j) course recording policy statement; (k) Title IX policy statement; and (l) instructor\u2019s statement of adherence to the Honor System. Individual colleges and departments may determine additional requirements for syllabus preparation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are two sample syllabi from previous individual studies\/Honors Capstone Projects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/honorsprogram\/files\/2024\/10\/sample-CHEM-491-capstone-syllabus-and-contract.pdf\">Sample Chemistry Individual Study Syllabus (CHEM 491)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/honorsprogram\/files\/2024\/10\/MUPR491-01-RWELLS-Sample.pdf\">Sample Music Individual Study Syllabus (MUPR 491)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"umw-collapsible-section umw-custom-block\"><div class=\"accordion__question\" data-js-question=\"true\"><button class=\"accordion__question__trigger\" data-js-trigger=\"true\">As an Honors Capstone advisor, what are my primary responsibilities?<\/button><div class=\"accordion__question__answer\">\n<p>While specific responsibilities may vary depending on the nature of the project, most Honors Capstone advisors can expect to do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Read the advisee\u2019s Capstone Proposal draft prior to submission to the Honors Program Committee and provide feedback as needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meet with the student regularly to discuss project progress and offer guidance.  (There is no specific requirement regarding meeting frequency, but many faculty meet with their advisees every week or every other week.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establish grading criteria for the project and assign a final grade at the end of the semester.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"umw-collapsible-section umw-custom-block\"><div class=\"accordion__question\" data-js-question=\"true\"><button class=\"accordion__question__trigger\" data-js-trigger=\"true\">How are Honors Capstone Projects evaluated?<\/button><div class=\"accordion__question__answer\">\n<p>The Honors Program staff document when students complete the Honors Capstone Preparation Workshop, submit the Capstone Proposal, present their work publicly, and submit the final version of the project (or major project artifact) to the Honors Program Canvas Workspace.  The Honors Program Advisory Committee evaluates Capstone Proposals and may recommend revisions.  It is up to the advising faculty member to establish grading criteria for the project, give the student feedback en route to the final product, and assign a final grade in Banner.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"umw-collapsible-section umw-custom-block\"><div class=\"accordion__question\" data-js-question=\"true\"><button class=\"accordion__question__trigger\" data-js-trigger=\"true\">Will I be compensated for advising an Honors Capstone Project?<\/button><div class=\"accordion__question__answer\">\n<p>Students typically register for these projects as individual study courses.  Unfortunately, UMW does not currently provide compensation for individual study courses unless the individual study occurs over the summer.  However, Capstone Project advising is a vital service to the university, as it allows Honors students to complete one of the most meaningful components of their Honors Program journey.  Capstone advising could also provide a significant addition to a one\u2019s tenure and\/or promotion case.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"umw-collapsible-section umw-custom-block\"><div class=\"accordion__question\" data-js-question=\"true\"><button class=\"accordion__question__trigger\" data-js-trigger=\"true\">My department\/college does not typically offer individual study courses.\u00a0 How should students register for the Capstone Project?<\/button><div class=\"accordion__question__answer\">\n<p>If your department\/college does not have a disciplinary 491, 492, etc. individual study offering, then students may register for HONR 491 instead. The HONR 491 registration could also be used for interdisciplinary projects.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"umw-collapsible-section umw-custom-block\"><div class=\"accordion__question\" data-js-question=\"true\"><button class=\"accordion__question__trigger\" data-js-trigger=\"true\">Can the HN Capstone Project overlap with capstone or senior seminar projects for a student\u2019s major?\u00a0 Can it overlap with disciplinary honors projects?<\/button><div class=\"accordion__question__answer\">\n<p>Yes and yes!  The Honors Capstone Project can overlap with senior projects for a student\u2019s major and\/or departmental honors projects.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"umw-collapsible-section umw-custom-block\"><div class=\"accordion__question\" data-js-question=\"true\"><button class=\"accordion__question__trigger\" data-js-trigger=\"true\">Can students use the Capstone Project to build on prior research they have completed at UMW?<\/button><div class=\"accordion__question__answer\">\n<p>Yes, this is fine, as long as the continued research is substantial enough to qualify for its own 3-credit Capstone study. The small sizes of honors courses led to me building relationships with students I\u2019d never have met otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Favorite part of Fredericksburg: I love the local running \/ hiking trails in and around Fredericksburg, and my favorite is the route to the quarry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Favorite part of UMW: The most remarkable part of my UMW experience has been the bench-sitting culture, especially during warm weather. But I also think the co-curriculars are nice as it gets you to attend things on campus you may not usually go to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Favorite Thing About Fredericksburg: Proximity to downtown. A walk downtown when the weather is beautiful is the perfect way to clear your head after a week full of studying and homework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Favorite Thing about UMW: The entire campus feels like home (which is why I chose to come to UMW)! I always feel at home on campus and see many friendly faces!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My favorite thing about UMW:  UMW has so many opportunities where you can become involved in something you truly are interested in. The<br>HSAC also provides leadership and planning for Honors community programming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-membership\">Membership<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>HSAC shall be comprised of Honors Scholars in good standing who will represent<br>the entire student body of the Honors Program. Representation from each class will be<br>selected by the Honors Program staff. The Director and Assistant Director of the Honors<br>Program (or a member of the Honors Program Committee) will serve as an Ad Hoc member<br>of the HSAC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Selection of Members: Each fall, the Director of the Honors Program will solicit volunteers to<br>serve on the HSAC. Each class must have at least one representative on the board. Each<br>appointment member shall serve one-year terms and are eligible for reappointment.<br>In the event of a vacancy, the Director of the Honors Program will appoint a replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All members of the HSAC are expected to attend the advisory board meetings. Any member<br>is eligible to serve a leadership role on the board. Leadership roles may vary but should<br>include at least the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chair<\/strong> \u2013 elected by the membership. This individual will report directly to the Director of the<br>Honors Program. The chair will organize the agendas for the HSAC meetings, will<br>disseminate information about the meetings to the HSAC, and if necessary will attend the<br>Honors Program Committee meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Secretary<\/strong> \u2013 elected by the membership. This individual will prepare all correspondences<br>related to the HSAC, including minutes. The minutes of the HSAC should be supplied to the<br>Honors Program Staff within one week of an HSAC meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-role\">Role<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The HSAC should meet at least monthly to plan activities for the Honors community, to<br>discuss policies or concerns of the Honors Scholars, and to promote academic programming<br>for the scholars. id=\"h-approved-research-methods-courses\">Approved Research Methods Courses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who matriculated into the UMW Honors Program prior to Fall 2019 may prepare for their capstone project in one of two ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take HONR 005, the Capstone Prep Workshop (0 credits).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take one of the approved Research Methods classes from the list below.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who opt to take, or have already taken, an approved methods class are still welcome to take HONR 005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Honors scholars who matriculated in or after Fall 2019 will fulfill this requirement with HONR 005, the Capstone Prep Workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"
