Regular mentoring is embedded within the course and takes place throughout the fall semester, through which students are offered weekly updates on deadlines, events, and support resources. Through such close support, students quickly learn the ropes of college and adjust to their new routine. When their FSEM ends in December, students continue to see their faculty advisor during their spring semester until they declare their major and transition to a faculty advisor within their chosen academic discipline. The peer mentors are an integral part of first-year students’ academic support network, which also includes the students’ FSEM instructors and a professional advisor from the Office of Academic Services.<\/p><p>The goal of the Peer Mentoring Program is to provide our first-semester students with mentoring and guidance from the perspective of an experienced UMW student.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Peer mentors help promote a positive relationship between faculty, Resident Assistants (RAs), and the first-year students in order to adequately support them through their transitional first semester at UMW.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peer mentors support the academic advisement and course registration process through in-class degree audit workshops or other activities as directed by the faculty, as well as by being available during the registration period to offer guidance and answer questions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peer mentors provide great connections for first-year students to get involved on campus in FSEM-related activities and activities beyond the classroom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peer Mentoring ProgramThe Peer Mentoring component of the First-Year Experience connects each section of the first-year seminar (FSEM) with a designated upper-class student. Seminars are taught by one of our highly-trained master teachers. Topics vary across disciplines and are designed to encourage discussion-based communal learning that mirrors the kind of learning environment typical of upper-level courses in the major. Individual topics for the courses and instructor bios are available at the <a href=\"http:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/fsem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FSEM website<\/a>.<\/p><p>The FSEM program is designed to help first-year students build the skills that they need for success here at UMW. As a result, every course involves an in-depth look at the course material through significant writing assignments, class discussions and oral presentations, and meaningful library research. Students learn about and access the resources available through the <a href=\"https:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/swc\/\">Speaking and Writing Center<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/libraries.umw.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Simpson Library<\/a>.
