He was taking a familiar UMW jaunt from Campbell to DuPont Hall, heading back to headquarters of the Division of Teaching and Learning Technologies (DTLT). Antonella remarked on the long, golden locks of hair following loosely in his wake: &#8220;c<em>avallo pazzo&#8221;<\/em> (crazy horse). We&#8217;ve been calling him that for near on 20 years now.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/LjodB\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/206\/501512579_6d6d3b8eb1_z.jpg\" alt=\"Patrick Explains Mashups\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/LjodB\">&#8220;Patrick explains Mashups&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0Image credit: Alan Levine<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Patrick was my colleague at UMW from December 2005 until Spring 2011. Patrick died far too soon just a few days ago.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite memories of Patrick is when he finally got tired of my cocky shit talking on the emergent field of Digital Humanities and told me to go fuck myself. A little bit of humble pie was always the order of the day at DTLT. He was absolutely a pillar of the weird, sensitive, and unrelentingly honest spirit that made DTLT what it was. We started work the same exact day in the same year doing the very same job, and I think we smoked the same amount of cigarettes. He was thoughtful, funny, and a genuinely nerdy guy that could move as easily between Medieval Literature as RDF. In fact, he saw those two arcane languages as fundamentally related.<\/p>\n<p>His vision of open educational data as a kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/a-fish-tank-called-wanda\/\">&#8216;fishtank&#8217;<\/a> that could be visualized, made accessible, and ultimately routable was the clearest articulation of what would ultimately become a holy grail for our team. Namely, open education as a dynamic, personable process rather than static content. Moreover, his refusal to tie his idea to any specific technology, like WordPress, made it all that much more noble and abstractable&#8212;which is very much where he lived.<\/p>\n<p>His life and work impacted me on a personal and professional level, and he will be missed. One of the real joys&#8212;and possibly under appreciated privileges&#8212;I&#8217;ve had professionally is being part of really amazing teams, which often translates to working with great people. I was living in New York City in the late 90s, just in time to witness (many times first-hand) the NY Yankees 3-peat World Series championships in 1998, 1999, and 2000. Now it might be easy to dismiss this team given they were chock-full of money and talent (they&#8217;re the Yankees, after all), but turns out the Orioles had an even higher payroll with arguably as much talent in 1998.* And also, <em>remember the Mets!!!<\/em> <img src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/72x72\/1f642.png\" alt=\"\ud83d\ude42\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em; max-height: 1em;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Beyond the money and individual stars there was something more at play&#8212;a sense of joyful commitment to the work married with talent made them something else all together. Even the leagues of folks who hate the Yankees would crack a little with that particular team&#8212;they were hard not to respect because they played as a team and the greatness transcended any one player. What&#8217;s not to love about an impossible infield play by hall of famer Derek Jeter to rob the opposition of a hit followed by an equally impressive stop from everyman utility player Scott Brosius. It was greatness all around; they made each other better and as a result were unstoppable for 3 straight years&#8212;a herculean feat in any sport. To boot, they seemed to be having fun all the while.<\/p>\n<p>Now edtech is not Major League Baseball, and this comparison is flimsy at best, but the NY Yankees of that era were emblematic of a great team, and one I witnessed first hand.\u2020 And for me the key seemed to be joy, having both a shared purpose as well as a lot of fun with your teammates. I think that translates very well for me with the work I did as an instructional technologist at University of Mary Washington alongside many amazing folks, but in particular Martha Burtis, Andy Rush, Shannon Hauser, and Jerry Slezak. They&#8217;re folks I miss being around regularly, but when we were together in the bullpen (maybe the baseball metaphor does work) exploring the magic of the mid-2000s web for higher ed was undergirded by a lot of laughter, and thankfully not spoiled by the years of <del>million dollar<\/del> state salaries. We both eventually left the university, taking the newly minted graduate Lauren Hanks (Brumfield at that time) with us as we ventured into the unknown territory of Reclaim Hosting. We were a super small team for many years, it wasn&#8217;t until 2017 that we brought on Meredith Huffman (another fresh UMW alum). On top of growing our shared hosting, Domain of One&#8217;s Own, and managed hosting significantly, we also had time to open up a CoWork space, a VHS store, and eventually Tim took over the arcade we built and spun it off into his own career&#8212;leaving the now civilized terrain of Reclaim. And not too long after Tim became the pinball wizard, Lauren left just this past September after realizing the previous eight years Reclaim was all she had known professionally. It was time for both to strike out for new territory, leaving old man bava to his devices. The contributions both Tim and Lauren made are too immense to list here, and in many ways I&#8217;ve not written either a proper goodbye on this blog for fear of letting either go&#8212;but I&#8217;ll save that discussion for my next appointment with Dr. Freud.\u2021<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/files.bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/tim_and_jim_reclaim_arcade-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-25901\" src=\"https:\/\/files.bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/tim_and_jim_reclaim_arcade-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/files.bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/tim_and_jim_reclaim_arcade-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/files.bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/tim_and_jim_reclaim_arcade-480x320.jpg 480w, https:\/\/files.bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/tim_and_jim_reclaim_arcade-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/files.bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/tim_and_jim_reclaim_arcade-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/files.bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/tim_and_jim_reclaim_arcade-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not going to lie, I was a bit concerned this past fall and winter as I was saying goodbye to Lauren and buying out Tim&#8217;s remaining share of Reclaim Hosting, and my mental stated reflected that transition. At the same time, one of the things I underestimated was just how resilient and awesome the team we&#8217;ve been building over the last several years has become. Meredith and Chris have become the pillars of both support and infrastructure this new city on the hill was built upon, and in addition to that, bringing on Goutam Vijay Narang, Pilot Irwin, and Taylor Jadin almost three years ago now ensured a really solid base from which we could continue to provide the service our community was used to, while at the same to building community through avenues like ReclaimTV, Discord, Roundup Newsletter, and Reclaim the Blog&#8212;all of which we have never done to the same extent previously. In many ways we&#8217;re now getting the word out better than ever before, and it&#8217;s still retains the tone and humor of Reclaim always represented. Just 18 months ago we brought on Noah Dorsett who has done a phenomenal job helping us shore up security, helping us all sleep that much better at night. But when Tim and Lauren were coming to their end of their reign, Meredith stepped up to play and all around manager; Pilot stepped up to manage support like a star; and Chris remained Chris keeping everything online.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30431\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/files.bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_5927-2048x1536-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30431\" class=\"size-large wp-image-30431\" src=\"https:\/\/files.bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_5927-2048x1536-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/files.bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_5927-2048x1536-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/files.bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_5927-2048x1536-1-480x360.jpg 480w, https:\/\/files.bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_5927-2048x1536-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/files.bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_5927-2048x1536-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/files.bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_5927-2048x1536-1.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30431\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Team Reclaim at Reclaim Open<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It is also worth noting, eight months after Noah came, we hired on Amanda Schmidt to buttress our growing Edtech group, which Taylor and Pilot were already helping us define.\u00a0 It has been truly rewarding to watch Edtech find its legs, part of which has been the push for community building, and we have become able to support Reclaim Cloud that much more effectively, as well as introduce new offerings such as ReclaimEDU and ReclaimPress, we&#8217;ve done anything but sit on our hands.<\/p>\n<p>But when Lauren left there was a serious HR and operations gap that we got truly lucky to be able to bring on Maren Deepwell as a contractor, her impact to keeping the team focused and sharing her vast expertise and mentoring has been invaluable. When I had to more extensive time off she worked with Meredith and the entire Reclaim team to make sure everything remained on track, and we scarce missed a beat&#8212;that fact alone speaks volumes to how much we have grown with our current incarnation of Reclaim.<\/p>\n<p>I think part of my musings here might be that I just finished up annual reviews, and it was amazing to see how happy folks are at Reclaim&#8212;that for me is the number one indicator of success. By that metric, we are by and large killing it. And our team is still growing, with a brilliant hire of superstar Jason Teitelman, whose has been an amazing fit to further reinforce out focus on all things support. And just this month we have added Cass le Fay into a hybrid support\/infrastructure role to provide Chris some relief with all things sysadmin&#8212;long overdue.<\/p>\n<p>I would be remiss if I did not end with one of the most impactful changes that has happened in just the last two months, bringing on Justin Webb as managing partner, to manage finances and bring some of his long-honed expertise in all matters IT to bear on Reclaim&#8217;s future. We have worked with Justin for more than 7 years as a consultant, after being colleagues at UMW for almost 7 more&#8212;so the ability to partner with a know entity who has seen the inner-workings of Reclaim for so many years was a true relief. As the reality of not being entirely alone takes hold, I can feel the pressure and dread turn once again to joy and possibility.<\/p>\n<p>As Tim stepped away the infrastructure team felt that hit, just as Lauren&#8217;s departure had us scrambling organizationally, so bringing on both Maren and, six months later, Justin marks the beginning of yet another era of Reclaim that has me excited all over again. Managing growth and valuing our services appropriately has it&#8217;s real challenges, and given Reclaim was never the work of one person, the fact that we&#8217;ve built a team that&#8217;s as good, and arguably deeper, than the one we had out first ten years really has me excited for what&#8217;s to come. It&#8217;s all about the people, and Reclaim has made all the right moves!<\/p>\n<p>_____________________________________<\/p>\n<p>*If you look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stevetheump.com\/Payrolls.htm#team%20payrolls\">MLB payrolls since 1998<\/a>, the Yankees have consistently been amongst the biggest spenders, but that has led to only 1 championship in 23 years&#8212;although arguably 2 given the Astros cheated. So while money always matters, there was also something else at play with this group.<\/p>\n<p>\u2020It was also hard not to be drawn in by the Chicago Bulls of the mid-90s and the god-like talent of Jordan even if you were not a basketball fan. But that team seemed to struggle with the cult of Jordan&#8212;whereas the Yankees championships were not as predicated on the one superstar (in fact, the one superstar often is an albatross in baseball, A-Rod anyone?). Now this could be a difference of sports, granted, but Jordan&#8217;s persona and talent were so ridiculously great that it was hard for any other player on that team to get much of the glory, which is unfortunately still playing out between Pippen and Jordan. What&#8217;s more, Jordan and the Bulls made Basketball a global phenomenon, which no team or player has been able to do for baseball. Saying goodbye is never easy, and sunsetting a duct-taped platform that gave life to thousands of voices for over 16 years is not trivial. Out of curiosity I peeked at the aggregate numbers for <a href=\"https:\/\/umwblogs.org\/\">UMW Blogs<\/a> when we first started tracking hits in 2010 (3 years after its launch in 2007) and it&#8217;s kind of mind-boggling:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28891\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28891\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-28891 \" src=\"https:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screen-Shot-2023-07-20-at-10.00.24-AM-e1689841968382-1024x317.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"174\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28891\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UMW Blogs traffic since 2010<\/p><\/div>\n<p>That&#8217;s well over 16 million users that started 20 million sessions and viewed 34 million pages that have been recorded. Not bad for a humble publishing platform for the UMW community that was born on a shared hosting account for $75 annually&#8212;let&#8217;s round-up to $90 with domain registration.\u00a0 In many ways UMW Blogs embodied the anarchic spirit of fast, cheap, and out-of-control technology that flew in the face of over-engineered, locked-down, and expensive systems that were increasingly third-party solutions. Not only did the existing systems provide little to no agency for the broader community, but there was seemingly less than zero interest in serving the context of an educational institution&#8212;teaching and learning was an after thought of these systems, if at all.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-28897 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/apocalyspe_now_480.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the primordial ooze from which UMW Blogs emerged in the Summer of 2007, almost exactly 16 years ago this week. It was not the product of any one person, but rather an amalgam of actors and factors conspiring to cultivate, capture, and broadcast the &#8220;life of the mind&#8221; at a small, public liberal arts college. The willingness to provide this online space to actively promote thoughtful, compelling, and authentic reflections from across the UMW community was a radical act of faith in the open web. And, I would argue, it did just that!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-28899 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/kk4g.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"247\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not pretending UMW Blogs saved lives or changed the world, it didn&#8217;t. But I would argue that this modest experiment underscored that education is at its root a set of social relations that the web, at its best, amplifies and augments in ways existing systems at the time failed to imagine. While WordPress was the technology that made these connections accessible, it was the human will to learn through connections that underlines that true value of this platform.<\/p>\n<p>There are literally thousands of examples of these connections, which will live on indefinitely given it&#8217;s been meticulously archived thanks to Shannon Hauser, Lauren Hanks, and Taylor Jadin.* But one example that struck me was a random blog called <a href=\"https:\/\/pchemblog.umwblogs.org\/\">pchem<\/a> that had only 3 posts in the Fall of 2011, one of which was the ubiquitous &#8220;Hello World!&#8221; The second was <a href=\"https:\/\/pchemblog.umwblogs.org\/2011\/10\/30\/phase-diagram\/\">a post describing a diagram<\/a> that illustrates the intermediate phases that occur in between graphite and diamond.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-28903 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/carbon_phase_diagram2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"542\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/carbon_phase_diagram2.jpg 896w, https:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/carbon_phase_diagram2-480x328.jpg 480w, https:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/carbon_phase_diagram2-768x525.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have no idea what any of this means, but the student who wrote this post was digging in quite thoughtfully, and then one day several years later&#8212;October 26, 2014, to be precise&#8212;24,000 other people found this post for some reason. It was the single biggest day of traffic ever, and it was a post written by a student to help explain a complex chart about conditions under which diamonds are forged from graphite at a given combination of temperature and pressure. The chemical process by which something so beautiful and priceless is formed from the salt of the earth is worth reflecting on as UMW Blogs is gracefully retired. A diamond in the rough, for sure.<\/p>\n<p>___________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>*Their amazing work to flatten thousands of sites and tens of thousands of posts to a HTML archive will provide an invaluable glimpse into higher-ed at the cross roads of the social web.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don\u2019t really know how to write this post. He provides a succinct and fascinating history into the rise of the killer stack that has reigned for over 20 years. There has been a lot of talk about the <a href=\"https:\/\/bmannconsulting.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/27\/new-hack-stack\/\">New Hack Stack<\/a>, and I&#8217;ve been fascinated with those developments for the last decade and <a href=\"https:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/the-next-evolution-of-reclaim\/\">what they could mean for Reclaim Hosting<\/a>. But at the end of the day, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LAMP_(software_bundle)\">LAMP<\/a> is still very much the workhorse behind the modern web. And if you&#8217;re like WTF is LAMP, it&#8217;s the suite of open source technologies Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP that were combined to build the web servers that still power much of the web.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25533\" src=\"https:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/LAMP-Stack.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"543\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/LAMP-Stack.jpg 850w, https:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/LAMP-Stack-480x307.jpg 480w, https:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/LAMP-Stack-768x491.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The article helped fill in a few gaps of my understanding of the rise of this stack, in particular the fact that the creators of MySQL went to O&#8217;Reilly in order to popularize the idea that LAMP was actually a thing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The terminology dates to around 2000 or 2001, with David Axmark and Monty Widenius, two of the cofounders of the relational database MySQL, credited for making the initial connection between the various parts into a combined service that could be sold to developers as an open-source framework. After the developers met with staffers at the publishing firm O\u2019Reilly Media, the firm\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2nBQjOk\">which specializes in technical learning manuals<\/a>\u00a0that target programmers and IT departments\u2014had embraced the term, evangelizing what it meant to the broader digital community.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting to me how the rise of a technology is accompanied by a linguistic sense making through a term or acronym that stands in for a more complex idea&#8212;think MOOC or Docker more recently. The power of naming and metaphor plays an often under appreciated role in the adoption of technologies, and just a few years after popularizing LAMP O&#8217;Reilly would bring us Web 2.0 (much of which was built on the LAMP stack).\u00a0 And say what you will about the term Web 2.0, it was a key term in many of us grok the cultural moment of the web during the mid 2000s. In fact, the following quote from the &#8220;I Love LAMP&#8221; article really hits home for 2004\/2005 me:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For years, LAMP stacks had natural advantages for end users, as their ubiquity allowed for the rise of web hosts that could offer cheap processing and storage for PHP-based services, meaning you could have a working interactive website for maybe $5 a month or less, depending on the size of the app and its use case.<\/p>\n<p>That was democratizing\u2014and allowed bedroom experimenters and large corporations alike to try new things online, outside of a walled garden. For the average consumer, the types of tools that won out allowed them to create polished presences for their businesses or creative work with a relatively limited amount of fuss.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This emerging reality in the early 2000s was something Zach Davis at CUNY was tuned into and he got me started down the path of cPanel LAMP hosting in 2003 or 2004. A pastime that soon became a career opportunity when I saw the work UMW was doing under <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gardnercampbell.net\/blog1\/\">Gardner Campbell<\/a> in 2005. It was remarkable! This was a university ed tech shop willing to venture outside the controlled spaces of the learning management system to allow &#8220;bedroom experimenters&#8221; like myself and the rest of the DTLT team to play. What&#8217;s more, it was eminently affordable; I think my first Bluehost account at UMW was something like $100 per year with a free domain. This was not a big investment in the technology per se, but rather a realigning of the value of people in communicating the cultural shift that was happening on the web at that moment. Faith in a seed, and a Reverend will bloom. Looking back, I think it was definitely a time and a place thing: being an educational technologist focusing on the power of an open source driven web in higher ed was simply the best job one could have in 2005. And UMW was ground zero for awesome in that regard.<\/p>\n<p>But I digress, another thing that resonates in this article is the the longevity of this technology stack. I have been writing about a <a href=\"https:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/the-next-evolution-of-reclaim\/\">post-LAMP environment for Reclaim Hosting for at least 7 years<\/a>,\u00a0 and while the next-generation of applications are here, getting them up and running easily and affordably is another thing. Just recently I have been playing with <a href=\"http:\/\/owncast.online\/\">Owncast<\/a>, an open source streaming software, and I could spin it up in 3 seconds using a Docker container on <a href=\"http:\/\/reclaim.cloud\/\">Reclaim Cloud<\/a>, but getting a reverse proxy for the SSL certificate led me down a rabbit hole. But in cPanel DNS, SSL, and one-click installers are integrated in such a way that the LAMP environment is seamless. Hosting companies like Digital Ocean are closer than anyone at providing a similar experience for the new generation of applications written in Ruby, Node,ja, Go, Java, etc., but the same level of ease and fluidity you find in a LAMP environment that keeps most folks out of the command line is not there yet.<\/p>\n<p>This article was really encouraging to me because when you help someone get up and running with a LAMP environment you are really giving them access to many of the tools that not only shaped but still drive the modern web we inhabit. This was a welcome reminder that faith in a seed approach to the educational web is still as valuable as it was 16 years ago.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I, too, love LAMP. And, of course, the retweets and likes almost immediately started to roll in, the eulogies were tweeted, and everyone was so <em>god damned right<\/em>. I remember more than a few folks telling me to check my ego when I decided to leave UMW, and I tried given no one person makes a group. And when a group leaves en masse as DTLT has the last couple of years, there is definitely a problem.
