We are an interdisciplinary group of faculty at the University of Mary Washington who are committed to establishing disability as a central component to the understanding and cultivation of diversity on our campus. A review of existing national collegiate honor societies revealed a variety that were based on population-specific characteristics such as: gender, ethnicity, age or veteran status, but none related to disability. Delta Alpha Pi sought to fill that void.<\/p><p>In addition to recognizing academic achievement, Delta Alpha Pi seeks to lessen and eventually eliminate the stigma and negative stereotyping that have been associated historically with disability. By working for an &ldquo;aDAPtable world,&rdquo; the members of Delta Alpha Pi challenge society to view disability as an aspect of diversity, existing on a continuum throughout an individual&rsquo;s lifespan, and encourage the implementation of universal design, so that the environment (learning, physical, attitudinal), not the individual, adjusts to provide access to all individuals.<\/p><p>Students who become members of Delta Alpha Pi identify themselves as honor students who have a disability. By their open acknowledgment of their disability status, they serve as role models for other students with disabilities and advance the goals of Delta Alpha Pi on their campuses and in the community. By recognizing their academic accomplishments, we honor them and acknowledge their determination and perseverance.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-criteria\">Criteria<\/h3><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Present with a documented disability and work with one of the faculty or staff members in the Office of Disability Resources, or self-identify as an individual with a disability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstrate an interest in disability issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>Undergraduate students must have:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Completed a minimum of 24 credits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earned an overall Quality Point Average of 3.10.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>Graduate Students must have:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Completed a minimum of 18 credits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earned an overall Quality Point Average of 3.30.<\/li>\n<\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dapi-at-umw\">DAPi at UMW<\/h3><p>UMW&rsquo;s chapter of DAPi is Zeta Mu which started in 2019. Zeta Mu holds an induction ceremony for new members every October. Emotional Support Animals<\/h1><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-umw-hero-ctas alignfull\"><div class=\"umw-hero__links\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"umw-hero__links__wrapper\">\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/section><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-animals-on-campus\">Animals on Campus<\/h2><p>Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, a postsecondary educational institution may not exclude an otherwise qualified student with a disability from any part of its programs or services, or otherwise discriminate against an applicant or student with a disability.<\/p><p>Under the Fair Housing Act, persons with disabilities may request a reasonable accommodation of an assistance animal, including an emotional support animal, in housing when its use is necessary to afford a person with a disability an equal opportunity to use and enjoy a dwelling and\/or the common areas of a dwelling.<\/p><p>For more information on animals at the University of Mary Washington, please review the UMW <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/go.boarddocs.com\/va\/umw\/Board.nsf\/goto?open&amp;id=9EHKBB5042F9\">Animals on University Property Policy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/go.boarddocs.com\/va\/umw\/Board.nsf\/goto?open&amp;id=B9EDJ471E390\">Assistance Animals Policy<\/a>.<\/p><p>For further information you can view the following resources:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/disability\/accommodations\/housing-accommodations\/assistance-animal-etiquette\/\">UMW Assistance Animal Etiquette<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/disability\/files\/2020\/04\/Assistant-and-Service-Animals-Poster-Accessible.pdf\">The Assistance Animals &ndash; Know The Difference Chart<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-service-animals\">Service Animals<\/h3><p>Service animals provide active support and are permitted to accompany the animal handler in all public areas at the University with limited exceptions.<\/p><p>If it is readily apparent that an individual has a disability and requires on-campus assistance of an animal that qualifies as a service animal, no further information will be requested, with limited exceptions (for example, the use of a service animal in a science lab setting may require additional information sharing to allow for the safety of all participants and the animal as well as the use of protective gear). In rare cases when it is determined that an animal cannot enter the environment, additional information will assist with determining alternative supports.<strong> It is strongly recommended for students using service animals to register with the Office of Disability Resources so that the student has a working relationship with ODR, which can provide helpful support throughout their time at UMW.<\/strong><\/p><p>An individual may be required to explain the work or task that the animal has been trained to perform, but the animal will not be required to demonstrate this task and no documentation of training will be required.<\/p><p>If the service animal will be residing in campus housing, the student is required to provide advanced notice to Residence Life and Housing and provide the following:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/disability\/files\/2020\/04\/Assistance-Animal-Owner-Responsibilities_fillable.pdf\">Owner\/Handler Responsibilities<\/a> &ndash; Student is required to agree to these responsibilities and provide this completed agreement to Residence Life and Housing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/disability\/files\/2020\/04\/Assistance-Animal-Registration-Form_fillable.pdf\">Animal Registration Form<\/a> &ndash; Student is required to provide this completed form to Residence Life and Housing.<\/li>\n<\/ol><p>Please review the <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/disability\/files\/2020\/04\/Guidelines-for-Supporting-Students-with-Service-Animals-in-Labs_fillable.pdf\">Guidelines for Supporting Students with Service Animals in Labs<\/a> if you are a student who requires the use of a service animal in a lab at UMW. Due to matters related to health and safety, it is extremely important that service animal handlers in labs consider&nbsp;registering with the Office of Disability Resources in advance of the start of their labs and discuss considerations of service animals in&nbsp;labs with their ODR specialist.<\/p><p><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-emotional-support-animals-esa\">Emotional Support Animals (ESA)<\/h3><p>An emotional support animal (ESA) is defined as<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>any animal with a primary role of providing a person with a disability emotional comfort. These animals are not required to undergo specialized training. Emotional support animals are not the same as service animals in that they are not individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability. A request for an ESA will be primarily treated as a housing accommodation request. ESAs may not reside in housing without approval from the ODR and the completion of the ESA procedures outlined below.<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-unique-and-restricted-animals\">Unique and Restricted Animals<\/h4><p>Due to the communal nature of university housing; and in order to mitigate additional health risks, new ESA requests for animals that are known to spread disease as reported by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthy-pets\/outbreaks\/index.html\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention US Outbreaks of Zoonotic Disease<\/a>&nbsp;will not be permitted. Other restricted animals include those animals which are not considered &ldquo;animals commonly kept in households&rdquo; under the Department of Housing and Urban Development&rsquo;s guidance regarding Assistance Animals. <br><br>&ldquo;If a [student] is requesting to keep a unique type of animal that is not commonly kept in households, then the requestor has the substantial burden of demonstrating a disability-related therapeutic need for the specific animal or the specific type of animal.&rdquo;<\/p><p><\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-esa-request-packet-includes\">ESA Request Packet includes:<\/h4><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/disability\/files\/2021\/12\/ESA-Request-Form.rev4224.pdf\"><strong>Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Request Form<\/strong><\/a> &ndash; This form must be completed by both the student and licensed provider and submitted to the Office of Disability Resources through the student&rsquo;s Accommodate portal (instructions below).<\/li>\n<\/ul><p><strong>Upon Approval &ndash; Complete:<\/strong><\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>ESA Roommate Acknowledgement<\/strong> &ndash; The student is required to discuss bringing the animal to live in campus housing with their roommate and share this completed acknowledgment with Residence Life (after being approved for an ESA). This discussion (or evidence of attempt) is required prior to the animal living in campus housing. It is important to ensure that the student makes all efforts to have this conversation with their roommate prior to the animal coming to campus. It is the student&rsquo;s responsibility to ensure this form is completed for every roommate from the point of approval throughout their time at UMW, and it should be provided to Residence Life as soon as possible. If issues arise with the completion of this acknowledgment, it is the student&rsquo;s responsibility to share these concerns with Residence Life and\/or ODR as early as possible so that assistance can be provided. We understand that it may not always be possible to talk with your roommate before coming to campus for the first time, and flexibility will be extended for new students to allow for reasonable, additional time for this conversation. If it is not possible to reach the roommate, please attach email correspondence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Assistance Animal Owner\/Handler Responsibilities<\/strong> &ndash; If approved for an ESA, the student is required to agree to these responsibilities and provide this completed agreement to Residence Life and Housing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Assistance Animal Registration Form<\/strong> &ndash; If approved for an ESA, the student is required to provide this completed form to Residence Life and Housing. This form must be updated on an annual basis. <strong>It is the student&rsquo;s responsibility to provide an updated Assistance Animal Registration Form each year to Residence Life and Housing.<br><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><p>After ODR has reviewed the request form, the student will be contacted via their UMW email to schedule an initial meeting with the assigned ODR specialist. The ODR specialist will meet with the student to engage in the interactive process and learn more about the student&rsquo;s request for an ESA. The student will be notified via email of the Housing Accommodation decision (typically within 2-3 business days after their meeting).<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-an-important-note\">An Important Note:<\/h4><p><strong>Be sure to complete your housing application for&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/residencelife\/\"><strong>Residence Life and Housing<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;by the deadlines established to ensure that you are assigned a residence on campus.<br>ODR does&nbsp;not&nbsp;recommend putting this step off until a determination is made.<\/strong><\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-considerations-before-requesting-an-esa\">Considerations Before Requesting an ESA<\/h4><p>Please note that accommodation requests should be directly related to the individual with the disability and disability-related needs, and should not be requested in order to better accommodate the animal. For example, a request for a first-floor room or single room in order to better accommodate an assistance animal are not considered reflective of disability-related needs for an individual with the disability.<\/p><p>It is strongly recommended to create a personal safety plan for the potential of an emergency\/fire drill situation and its impact on the animal, as an individual would plan for these situations for themselves (for example, considering having a &ldquo;grab bag&rdquo; with needed supplies\/medications, leash, and other important emergency items to be able to quickly leave in the event of an emergency or drill).<\/p><p>Taking appropriate responsibilities to plan is essential for every emergency, including considerations for your animal. Several additional resources to assist with emergency planning are provided below:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthypets\/emergencies\/index.htmlhttps:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthy-pets\/emergency-preparedness\/index.html\">Pet Safety and Emergencies<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ready.gov\/pets\">Pets and Animals<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.humanesociety.org\/resources\/make-disaster-plan-your-pets\">Make a Disaster Plan for your Pets<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul><p><strong>It is important to note that the complete responsibility of being an animal handler on campus falls on the student. This information is provided to help faculty and students assess how to best implement this accommodation in their courses.<\/p><p>*Important Note: &ldquo;Flexibility with&hellip;&rdquo; does not equate to a waiver from attendance or participation requirements &ndash; but rather a need to be flexible on top of whatever policies faculty already hold as it relates to these areas of assessment. This may also necessitate occasional deadline extensions of 24-48 hours as well as ability to make-up exams.<\/p><p>Students are always encouraged and expected to attend classes, and faculty\/instructors have the right to hold students to attendance and class participation requirements, with reasonable accommodation. A student who has a disability-related need for flexibility with attendance may register with the Office of Disability Resources (ODR). After a thorough review of documentation and meeting with the student, ODR may approve this flexibility as an accommodation that would be listed as &ldquo;Flexibility with Attendance&rdquo; on their accommodation letter.  Students who may require this accommodation often do not go to the doctor each time they may need to miss class but instead, rely on self-care and communication with their support system. Although faculty\/instructors commonly request documentation from students who miss class (i.e., doctor&rsquo;s note), it may not be feasible or appropriate for students who are approved for this accommodation in your course. In many cases, these conditions are lifelong, and students are well educated on what they need to do in order to provide self-care; requesting a note from a provider may delay their self-care regimen or exacerbate their symptoms further. This means that a student with an accommodation for &ldquo;Flexibility with Attendance&rdquo; may require exceptions to meeting attendance expectations in a particular course, when it is educationally feasible. Faculty\/instructors are required to provide approved ODR-accommodations to students; however, faculty\/instructors are not required to alter the learning outcomes for their course.<\/p><p>As with any student who is registered with the ODR:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Disability-related information should remain confidential. Information regarding students who are registered with ODR should be shared on a need-to-know basis, and always with the student&rsquo;s consent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ODR does not share students&rsquo; disability-related information outside of the office unless these requirements are met, with the exception of few circumstances that are required by law.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students are approved for only the listed accommodations on their accommodation letter through the ODR. In general, providing additional unapproved accommodations is not advised, unless the same accommodation may be provided to any other student (with or without disabilities) in the course.<\/li>\n<\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-student-responsibilities\">Student Responsibilities<\/h3><p>All students who are registered with ODR have a responsibility to communicate their needs to ODR and to their faculty members in order to receive accommodations, including communication regarding their needs related to disability-related absences. While faculty are required to have an interactive discussion with students who present a letter with the flexible attendance or deadline accommodation(s), students need to be mindful that not every course component can be provided an extension. Students with flexible attendance are not entitled to miss an unlimited number of classes. Students with this accommodation are responsible for completing all missed tests, quizzes, and\/or assignments and for meeting all the same essential standards and expectations of any other student. It is important to know that not all in-person experiences can be made up or recreated. Some things, such as guest speakers, events, field trips, labs, etc. cannot be recreated or made up; therefore an impact to grading may be inevitable. Furthermore, should a course&rsquo;s attendance be deemed essential to the course and\/or curriculum, the attendance accommodation may not be reasonable. Should this arise in the conversation between student and faculty, students are encouraged to reach out to ODR as soon as possible.<\/p><p>All students with ODR accommodations, including flexibility with attendance and\/or deadlines, are responsible for:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Providing their accommodation letter to their faculty members. Accommodations are not retroactive and take affect at the time faculty receive the Students Faculty Accommodation Letter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completing all coursework assigned.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Initiating a discussion regarding this accommodation with their faculty\/instructor with whom they require the accommodation and reviewing ODR&rsquo;s guidance on absence and deadline accommodations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communicating to ODR, should a concern or issue related to accommodations arise and is unable to be resolved between the student and the faculty\/instructor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reviewing your course syllabi and understanding the attendance and make-up policies and procedures for each of your classes.<\/li>\n<\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-faculty-responsibilities\">Faculty Responsibilities<\/h3><p>Although this accommodation does not excuse a student from meeting course requirements, it should be understood that students who are approved for this accommodation may miss exams\/quizzes, assignment deadlines, portions of class participation requirements, and group\/partner in-class work. Consideration in allowing substituted and make-up work is appropriate, and when educationally feasible. Deadline extensions are not intended to provide lengthy, open-ended deadlines or enable a lack of planning\/preparation on a student&rsquo;s part. Generally speaking, ODR would advocate for 24-48 hour extensions in order to grant the student some grace when their condition impacts them substantially and without warning. Please note that some circumstances may warrant additional time beyond this standard guidance and ODR is always available for consultation in these situations.<\/p><p>When provided with an accommodation letter by a student receiving the &ldquo;Flexibility with Attendance&rdquo; or &ldquo;Flexibility with Deadlines&rdquo; accommodation(s), it is strongly advised to encourage the student to set up a time to meet (in person or remotely) with the faculty\/instructor to develop a plan of expectations in the course before absences occur. Expectations surrounding communication of absences and make-up work should be made clear to the student, and an agreement between the faculty\/instructor and student should be established by using the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/disability\/files\/2020\/12\/Frame-Work-and-Quick-Sheet_Accessible.pdf\">Disability Related Absence&nbsp;Framework<\/a>. If you believe a student has unrealistic expectations about what this accommodation means or problems arise in practice, it is always appropriate to refer a student back to ODR to clarify expectations and policies around their accommodations.<\/p><p>We ask faculty to evaluate the role of attendance and class participation within their given course prior to meeting with students. Please think through the following questions as absences usually directly affect a grade associated with participation:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What does the syllabus state regarding attendance\/participation and how can I be more flexible for students with this accommodation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What stated learning outcomes\/objectives require participation? For example &ndash; does participation mean active discussion in open forum style conversations or merely an attendance quiz or some other attendance related evaluation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is attendance factored in as part of the final course grade?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is there classroom interaction between the instructor and students, and\/or among students which is evaluated and incorporated into a student&rsquo;s final grade?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do student contributions constitute a significant component of the learning process? Are there alternate ways in which a student could contribute?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does the course rely on student participation as a method for learning?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is the impact on the educational experience of other students in the class?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is there content only offered in class?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are assignments used as class content when they are due? For example &ndash; the assignments are used to generate class discussion the day they are due?<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>ODR understands that each course is different and that each faculty\/instructor has unique learning outcomes that are intended for all students enrolled in a particular course. The ODR is available to consult with faculty\/instructors for questions. Frequently asked questions involving this accommodation are related to decisions of whether there is a way to make up class participation requirements or a particular in-class activity\/assignment (e.g., peer review, group discussions, etc.).&nbsp;<strong>It is strongly recommended to proactively contact the ODR with any questions to avoid potential compounded issues from arising.<\/strong><\/p><p>The Office of Disability Resources is available to consult with faculty\/instructors about whether there is a fundamental alteration to a course due to the provision of an accommodation. A determination of fundamental alteration due to provision of an approved ODR accommodation to a course should not be the sole decision of a faculty member\/instructor. Prior to engaging in the <a href=\"https:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/disability\/files\/2020\/06\/Guidelines-for-Determining-Fundamental-Alteration.pdf\">Fundamental Alteration Determination Process<\/a>, the faculty member\/instructor should consult with ODR.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-guidance-on-make-up-work\">Guidance on Make Up Work<\/h3><p>When a student absence occurs, faculty are responsible for determining a reasonable alternative and equivalent way in which students can successfully complete essential course requirements without compromising course standards. ODR recommends a review of the learning outcomes of each course to determine alternatives to the preset class activities and assignments in which may be available. Recommended methods to be considered include:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Altering timelines for coursework and tests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allowing students to attend repeat lectures\/labs given at other course sections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assign comparable questions or essays around class discussion topic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give students an incomplete grade to allow an opportunity to fulfill course requirements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talk with the student prior to drop or withdrawal deadlines to determine whether this would be beneficial.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consult with ODR about options for support of students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discuss a plan and set timeframe for makeup exams\/quizzes (i.e. within 1-2 days). Be mindful that each student is different and absences associated with a disability may require more or less time.<\/li>\n<\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-contacting-odr\">Contacting ODR<\/h3><p>Please do not hesitate to contact ODR, by emailing <a href=\"mailto:odr@umw.edu\">odr@umw.edu<\/a> or calling (540) 654-1266, if there is any difficulty with reaching an agreement between faculty\/instructor and student related to flexible attendance and\/or deadline accommodations. Starting Spring 2019 we are excited to share, that ODR will be assisting all Faculty who have a deaf or heard of hearing student, with approved captioning accommodations, caption videos as required for their courses. Should Faculty be unable to locate a captioned video in which they need to use for their course, ODR will work with the Faculty and a third party service in order to provide the captioned video. The cost for these videos will come from ODR&rsquo;s budget as long as their is a student with the approved captioning accommodations registered for their course. Faculty and students should work together to agree upon a testing time. Faculty and students are not required to utilize the testing center, but faculty may elect to implement any or all student accommodations via use of the testing center.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students are responsible for scheduling their own appointments (at the time agreed upon with faculty). Faculty will be notified electronically of scheduled appointments. Faculty should contact the student and ODR immediately, if the appointment time was not approved.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ODR recommends having a discussion with the student to go over a process for handling any testing questions that may occur during a test or last-minute changes to tests or testing parameters. If ODR staff is available, ODR will email faculty with student questions during a testing appointment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ODR Testing Center cannot honor unannounced, day-of quizzes for students. Contact ODR with any questions.<\/li>\n<\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-exams\"><strong>Exams<\/strong><\/h3><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tests are managed via the <a href=\"https:\/\/umw-accommodate.symplicity.com\/\">Accommodate case management system<\/a>.&nbsp; Faculty can use their UMW SSO to access this portal. Faculty should complete Exam Upload Form found within the portal and upload the test. Uploading exams in Word format when possible, instead of a PDF, is preferred. <strong>Exams must be uploaded at least 2 business days prior to the testing appointment.<\/strong> Canvas exams proctored at the testing center only require the completion of the upload form with no test being attached.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tests that need to be scanned, enlarged, or converted into an accessible format per accommodation need to be received by the ODR Testing Center with a minimum of 3 business days in advance of the student&rsquo;s testing appointment. Note: this is a different time frame than for the general test receipt.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Faculty may deliver paper copies of tests and\/or scantrons to ODR. Copies of the Exam Upload Form are available at ODR front desk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ODR provides internet disabled testing computers for students needing accommodations. Canvas exams are taken on students&rsquo; personal laptops (similar to a classroom environment).
