Administrative Business:

  1. The committee thanks Steve Greenlaw for stepping in as the UFC’s representative to the UCC.
  1. Comments from John Morello:
    1. Process moving forward regarding prefix changes that impact other programs ideally would become that the department proposing the prefix change must include list of courses/programs that will be impacted and need to be updated. A formal procedure for this should be discussed by this committee at a later date.
    2. Process moving forward should include a revision of new course / program cover sheets to indicate whether a new course / program is predominantly online and if so, should include approval from the Distance and Blended Learning Committee.
    3. These issues will be discussed at the March UCC meeting.

New Business:

  1. Change to Arts Administration minor
    1. The addition of DANC 499 internship in addition to THEA 499.
    2. The proposal was approved unanimously.

 

  1. Change to Practical Ethics minor
    1. The language in the minor was changed to better allow independent studies, internships, and undergraduate research and similar opportunities to count towards the minor with the approval of the program director.
    2. The committee suggests moving the line “Students are encouraged to seek service… …through the Center for Honor, Leadership, and Service.” From the requirements to the minor description.
    3. The proposal was approved unanimously.

 

  1. Change to Data Science minor
    1. The minor is overhauled to include the new DATA 101 prerequisite, the new DATA-prefix entry sequence, a second-level statistics course, and a choice of upper-level analytics courses.
    2. The committee discussed the possibility of DSCI 259 counting under line (A) as an alternative to STAT 280 equivalents.
    3. The committee agreed to table the minor and send it back to the sponsoring department for double-check. The committee intends to vote on their response electronically.

 

  1. Change to Contemplated Studies minor
    1. The courses that count towards the minor was updated to better include independent studies, remove RELG 287 (now deleted), and add PSYC 372, 373, 374.
    2. The proposal was approved unanimously.

 

  1. New course DATA 370, Special Topics in Data Science
    1. Since a new minor / program in data science now exists, a dedicated prefix for data science special topics courses. Prior special topics in the data science field have had to be offered as CPSC courses.
    2. The proposal was approved unanimously.

 

  1. New course HSCI 120, Medical Terminology for Health Professionals
    1. Small typo: medial language, should be medical language?
    2. A similar course exists at Germanna Community College
    3. Current prerequisite is “permission of instructor”. Can it become “enrolled in 1+2+1, pre-nursing program” or “enrolled in 1+2+1 BSN program or permission of instructor”?
    4. Terminology in sample syllabus uses conflicting tenses: exploration, identification, identify
    5. Should this course be included in the list of courses that need to be taken at UMW versus currently taken at Germanna? And should there be changes on page 232 of the the catalog to include language in the program that UMW students must take this one instead of the Germanna equivalent?  Is this an online course?  Where is the Distance & Blended Learning Committee?
    6. The committee agreed to hold the proposal for further clarification of language.

 

  1. New course RELG 342, Neuro-Theology
    1. Proposal is lacking in a library use statement.
    2. Course has been taught previously as a special topics courses.
    3. Concerns were raised regarding the substantiveness of the course syllabus.
    4. Concerns were also raised regarding the “D-“ grade, which is not offered at UMW.
    5. The committee agreed to return this proposal and ask for clarification on the course schedule / topics and the grading criteria.

 

  1. New course PHIL/RELG 353, Islamic Philosophy and Theology
    1. Course has been taught previously as a special topics course.
    2. Syllabus contains line “Student participation in class discussion is required above and beyond that required of a College student”
    3. The syllabus contains the “D-“ grade
    4. The proposal was approved unanimously

 

  1. New course RELG 253, Muhammad and the Qur’an
    1. Course has been taught once previously as a special topics course with low enrollment.
    2. The syllabus contains the “D-“ grade
    3. The proposal was approved unanimously

 

  1. New course RELG 252, Religion and Politics in Islam
    1. Course has been taught once previously as a special topics course.
    2. The syllabus contains the “D-“ grade
    3. The proposal was approved unanimously

 

  1. New course SOCG 355, Death and Society
    1. The proposal was approved unanimously

 

  1. New course DATA 101, Introduction to Data Science
    1. The proposal was approved unanimously

 

  1. Change in prerequisites MBUS 502, Financial Management
    1. Proposal to remove graduate accounting as a prerequisite, since undergraduate accounting is already a prerequisite of the other prerequisite.
    2. This proposal should be an expedited proposal

 

  1. Change in prerequisite and crosslisting of DSCI 219, Foundations for Data Science
    1. This proposal should be an expedited proposal
