Learning Outcomes for CE Classes<\/h1><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

Learning Outcomes for CE Classes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Several courses at UMW have been designated as \u201ccommunity-engaged\u201d or “CE”. These courses require a minimum of 10 hours of work within the community. These courses also require reflection on the service learning or community involvement component. A current list of community-engaged (CE) classes is provided here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The requirements and learning outcomes of these classes are the following:<\/p>\n\n\n

UMW students help measure and create a rendering of houses of people who were enslaved at Buffalo Forge, a historic plantation near Glasgow, Virginia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
    \n
  • All CE courses must involve 10 hours of engagement with the community as well as reflection.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • All CE courses  must meet the following 3 outcomes:<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • \n
      \n
    • Analysis of Knowledge:<\/strong><\/em> Connects and extends knowledge (facts, theories, etc.) from one\u2019s own academic study\/ field\/ discipline to community engagement and to one\u2019s own participation in community life, politics, and government.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Identity\/Commitment:<\/strong><\/em> Provides evidence of experience in community-engagement activities and describes what one has learned about oneself as it relates to a reinforced or clarified commitment to public action.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Action and Reflection:<\/strong> <\/em>Demonstrates independent experience, accompanied by reflective insights or analysis about the aims and accomplishments of one\u2019s actions<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • In addition, CE courses may also seek to incorporate the following additional outcomes:<\/strong>\n
        \n
      • Diversity of Communities\/Cultures:<\/strong> <\/em>Demonstrates evidence of adjustment in own attitudes and beliefs because of working within and learning from diversity of communities and cultures.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Communication:<\/em> <\/strong>Tailors communication strategies to effectively express, listen, and adapt to others to establish relationships to further community action.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Contexts\/Structures: <\/strong><\/em>Demonstrates ability and commitment to collaboratively work across and within community contexts and structures to achieve a community aim.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Academic Impact: <\/strong><\/em>Uses community engagement experience to inform one\u2019s academic study\/field\/discipline.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
