The University of Mary Washington and Germanna Community College will host a Public Square Debate <\/a>on Wednesday, March 11 from 6-8 pm in the Chandler Ballroom in the Cedric Rucker University Center. A reception will follow the event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event invites voices into a shared space where the goal isn\u2019t to win, but to understand. Using the Braver Angels debate format, participants explore what it means to live in a democracy.<\/p>\n<\/div>

How does the Public Square Debate work? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Using a light parliamentary style, participants will discuss a resolution practicing civil discourse and a respectful exchange of ideas. This Public Square Debate helps us celebrate the 250 anniversary of American Independence and Virginia\u2019s central role in American history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will discuss the following topic, “Social media is a threat to democracy.” To start us off, two people will present prepared statements supporting the statement, and two opposing it. As a participant, there is no need to prepare anything in advance. Members of the audience are invited to ask questions, and to volunteer to stand up and present brief statements in support or opposition, after the first four speakers talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, and community members are invited to participate in this free event. The debate should last about one hour and will be facilitated by a professional facilitator from the College Debates and Discourse Alliance<\/a>. After the first hour, there will be an opportunity to socialize in the second hour and light refreshments will be served.<\/p>\n<\/div>

What is the Public Square Debate Initiative?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As part of the VA250 commemorations of U.S. independence, Public Square Debates<\/a> bring together students from high schools, 2-year and 4-year colleges, and members of the broader community for a respectful exchange of ideas on timely civic questions. Using the Braver Angels debate format, these events invite diverse voices into a shared space\u2014where the goal isn\u2019t to win, but to understand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Public Square Debate initiative is a partnership among VA250, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), Braver Angels, and the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA), which houses the College Debates & Discourse Alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the Braver Angels debate format?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Unlike a traditional debate format, Braver Angels Collegiate Debates are non-competitive and participatory, allowing everyone in the room the opportunity to speak and be heard.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The debates are run by a trained chair using a light parliamentary format. The Braver Angels debate format is being used to promote viewpoint diversity and foster civil discourse on college campuses all over the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Where will the Public Square Debate be held? <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Public Square Debate will be held in the Chandler Ballroom on the first floor of the Cedric Rucker University Center (CRUC) on the UMW Campus in Fredericksburg. The CRUC is located on College Avenue in Fredericksburg, VA 22401. It is closest to Parcell St. It should show up in your GPS if you put in \u201cUMW University Center College Ave.\u201d It is a big, newish brick building. There is an entrance on College Avenue. Visitors can find parking in the GW Parking Lot and the Thornton Street Parking Lot, or on College Ave. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They work to coordinate the trips, host weekly trip meetings, and lead by example on the trip. A breakdown of responsibilities and time commitment can be found below.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-1744 size-medium\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/communityengagement\/files\/2025\/03\/IMG_7361-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"2025 summer trip leaders on the 2023 maine trip\" class=\"wp-image-1744\" srcset=\"\/\/academics.umw.edu\/communityengagement\/files\/2025\/03\/IMG_7361-225x300.jpg 225w, \/\/academics.umw.edu\/communityengagement\/files\/2025\/03\/IMG_7361.jpg 627w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>Fall<\/strong> students should dedicate about an <strong>1 hour a week<\/strong> to ASB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Leaders dedicate this semester to getting the trip off the ground. You will help out at fundraisers, promote the trip, and work with the rest of the leadership team to plan the Trip Reveal Party. This time commitment includes some leader meetings, which will likely be once or twice a month.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>Spring<\/strong>, students should dedicate <strong>2-3 hours<\/strong> a week to ASB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This semester is where things speed up. This time commitment includes the weekly trip meeting. The remaining 1-2 hours is for managing the responsibilities of a leader! While some of them may seem hard – please remember that you will have your co-leader and the rest of the leadership team to help out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-coordinating-the-trip\">Coordinating the Trip<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\">Attend weekly leader meeting. This meeting includes all trip leaders (regardless of trip), the Fundraising Chair(s), the Social Media Manager, and the Trip Coordinator.<\/span>\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\">Communicate with Habitat affiliate to nail down plans and get further information <\/span><span data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\">about trip details.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If housing is not provided from the affiliate, trip leaders must reach out to rec centers, churches, campgrounds, and other locations to find a place for the group to stay.\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\">Establish a basic trip itinerary and adapt it as changes come up.<\/span>\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-weekly-trip-meetings\">Weekly Trip Meetings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Work together to plan what will be discussed at the meetings and create a presentation for it.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tell new trip-goers about Habitat for Humanity and its mission.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep trip-goers up to date on fundraisers and events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look into icebreakers and other activities for the group to get to know each other.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lead the group in coming up with a dinner plan for the week – we cook our own dinners!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If time and varying schedules allow, plan a bonding event prior to the trip. This is a great opportunity for students to get together outside the meeting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-on-the-trip\">On the Trip<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXP89509695\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXP89509695\">Encourage students, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXP89509695\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorZoomed BCX0 SCXP89509695\">lead<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXP89509695\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXP89509695\"> by example, keep up team <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXP89509695\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXP89509695\">morale, communicate with co-leader, and work with the staff advisor <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXP89509695\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXP89509695\">to handle any minor problems if they arise.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-benefits-of-being-a-trip-leader\">Benefits of Being a Trip Leader<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your trip registration fee is discounted. VISTA members serve full-time for one year with nonprofit organizations and public agencies. How VISTA works:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>VISTA members help communities by developing and expanding programs that address poverty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They work on issues like public health, education, the environment, public safety, and employment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>VISTA members are recruited directly by organizations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several VISTA jobs available: <a href=\"https:\/\/transformmidatlantic.org\/programs\/americorps-vista\/become-a-transform-mid-atlantic-americorps-vista-member\/\">Transform Mid-Atlantic VISTA positions (Maryland and DC). <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-summer-americorps-vista\">Summer AmeriCorps VISTA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank (FRFB) is hosting an AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate program – an 8\/10 week, full-time national service and grant-funded opportunity where members support community organizations in anti-poverty efforts. Working for nonprofits or public agencies, Summer Associates provide 40 hours of direct service each week, such as running youth enrichment programs, addressing food insecurity, and supporting community outreach. As a Summer Associate with FRFB, you will be supporting our Distribution Team in multiple capacities. <a href=\"https:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/communityengagement\/files\/2026\/04\/Food-Bank-summer-positions.pdf\">Please view the full position descriptions.<\/a>\u00a0<strong>During your term of service, June 1st – August 7th<\/strong>, you will receive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Living Allowance (Stipend)<\/strong> of $957.46 biweekly; AND upon successfully completing the term, you can choose a Summer Education Award – $1,565.08 to be paid towards existing federal student loans or towards future education costs at an accredited university, OR an End-Of-Term Stipend of $345.80 to be paid directly to the member with their final living allowance payment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Holidays<\/strong> (up to 3 days, depending on start date) and Sick \/ Personal Leave (up to 3 days \/ 24 hours)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Training<\/strong>, experience, and professional development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The service term is June 1st – August 7th, and these dates are definitive and non-negotiable<\/strong>. The program is based at the University of Virginia and is part of AmeriCorps. The adviser positions are for recent college graduates. Candidates apply throughout December and January, go through interview rounds in February and March, and if selected as a finalist, visit an assigned high school site in April. id=\"h-americorps-vista\">AmeriCorps VISTA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The UMW Center for Community Engagement works with <a href=\"https:\/\/compact.org\/about\">Campus Compact<\/a> to place an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americorps.gov\/serve\/americorps\/americorps-vista\">AmeriCorps VISTA<\/a> on the UMW campus. In partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/americorps.gov\/\">AmeriCorps<\/a>, the Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA Program seeks to activate higher education institutions and their partners to work together to make an impact on poverty in their local community. The Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA Program places AmeriCorps members for year-long terms of service at colleges and universities. The AmeriCorps members build capacity for their host sites, working behind-the-scenes to expand and improve programs that impact low-income people on college campuses and in communities\u2014helping to fulfill the public purposes of higher education and lift individuals and communities out of poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hazel Hill Homework Club<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UMW is hosting a new Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA member in the 2025-2026 school year who is serving the Hazel Hill Homework Club. The VISTA will assist in recruiting volunteers and strengthening the tutoring interventions for low-income K-12 students living in the Hazel Hill Apartments – working towards building capacity of both Hazel Hill and UMW. The VISTA has an office in the Center for Community Engagement in the Cedric Rucker University Center. Day. This is part of Day on Democracy, a tradition started at UMW and now recognized nationwide by universities and colleges. At University of Mary Washington, most lecture classes are cancelled each year on Election Day, to encourage members of our community to participate in our democratic system. Classes that meet once a week or labs continue as scheduled and as communicated by instructors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original language of the motion that was passed by the UMW UFC on March 27th, 2019 reads as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Day on Democracy<\/b><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The UFC voted on two motions:<\/span>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Express our support for the fundamental ideas outlined by the student group Citizens United. Unanimously approved by the UFC.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To cancel all regularly-scheduled lecture and seminar meetings on Election Day each November. Courses that meet once per week (i.e., on Tuesday evenings) and laboratory meetings will be exempt from this policy; faculty teaching these courses will be at their discretion on whether to convene as usual. 13 in favor; 5 opposed. UFC passed the motion. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each year on Election Day, students are encouraged to use their day off from classes to engage in our democratic system by driving home to vote or voting locally. Students are also asked to seek volunteer opportunities in their communities. Day on Democracy students often work with UMW Votes to help provide free rides to the polls and hand out sample ballots and answer any questions students may have about voting. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The university is <em><strong>not<\/strong> <\/em>closed on Election Day, all offices remain <em><strong>open<\/strong> <\/em>and most faculty and staff will work regular hours. Student employees should check with their supervisors regarding expectations for work on Election Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-syllabus-statement\">Syllabus Statement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For faculty, we recommend that you include this statement on your syllabus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Registering to Vote:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At UMW, Engagement is part of our ASPIRE values. year, COAR conducts a gift box drive for children enrolled in the local Virginia Preschool Initiative and Head Start programs. This is a campus and community-wide effort to provide preschoolers in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania with toys, winter clothes, and school supplies before the holiday season. Students wrap gift boxes at the annual wrapping party to prepare for the campus-wide gift drive. Then faculty, staff, and students check out the boxes to fill up with items such as storybooks, coloring books, crayons, hats, gloves, and small toys. “off years” in Virginia! This fall, there are several important races on the ballot, including Governor and Attorney General.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, the University Faculty Council voted to cancel most classes on Election Day. This is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/communityengagement\/umw-votes\/student-civic-engagement\/day-on-democracy\/\">Day on Democracy<\/a>, a tradition started at UMW and now recognized nationwide by universities and colleges. At University of Mary Washington, most lecture classes are cancelled on Election Day, to encourage members of our community to participate in our democratic system. Classes that meet once a week or labs continue as scheduled and as communicated by instructors.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/communityengagement\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_4398-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Students participate in National Voter Registration Day\" class=\"wp-image-448\" srcset=\"\/\/academics.umw.edu\/communityengagement\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_4398-300x200.jpg 300w, \/\/academics.umw.edu\/communityengagement\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_4398-768x512.jpg 768w, \/\/academics.umw.edu\/communityengagement\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_4398-1024x683.jpg 1024w, \/\/academics.umw.edu\/communityengagement\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_4398-680x453.jpg 680w, \/\/academics.umw.edu\/communityengagement\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_4398-1140x760.jpg 1140w, \/\/academics.umw.edu\/communityengagement\/files\/2019\/10\/IMG_4398.jpg 1296w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>UMW Votes has several activities planned this fall to help educate, register, and mobilize student voters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>September 10th, 12-3 on Campus Walk: Celebrate <strong>Constitution Day<\/strong> by picking up a free pocket constitution and registering to vote.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>September 24th (rescheduled), 12-3 on Campus Walk: Celebrate <strong>National Voter Registration Day<\/strong> – enjoy games, info tables, and meet some of the candidates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>October 29th, 11-2 on Campus Walk: <strong>Vote Early Day<\/strong> – enjoy games, info tables, and get a ride to the polls to vote early.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>November 4: <strong>Election Day<\/strong> – rides to the polls.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>November 4, 2024 <\/strong>election will be celebrated on the UMW campus with rides to the polls <em><strong> <\/strong><\/em>from the Bell Tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For faculty, we encourage you to include this statement on your syllabus, and to use PPT slides to share information with your students:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-syllabus-statement\">Syllabus Statement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Registering to Vote:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At UMW, Engagement is part of our ASPIRE values.
