WRITING INTENSIVE COURSE
PROPOSAL

 To propose a course as writing intensive, please provide the information requested below.  E-mail the completed proposal with supplemental materials to the chair of the Writing Intensive Committee, Surupa Gupta sgupta@umw.edu. In addition, send one hard copy of the original completed WI proposal form with supplemental materials to Surupa Gupta, Monroe  Hall 340.  If the proposal is approved, the committee will ask the University Faculty Committee to endorse that decision at its next meeting.  Proposals for courses to be offered spring term 2012 must be received by September 20, 2011; for summer term 2012 by November 14, 2011; and for fall term 2012 by November 28, 2011.  A detailed description including the WI program’s goals can be found at http://academics.umw.edu/writing-fredericksburg/for-faculty/.

1.      What are the goals and/or objectives of your course? Explain how the writing component of the course will
a) enhance the learning of the material and b) improve students’ writing skills, as described in the WI Program goals (

2.      Briefly describe the writing assignments that you anticipate requiring. For each assignment indicate the type of writing (e.g., formal or informal); the number of pages; and the percentage of the course grade.

 

3.      Through what means do you expect to offer students guidance concerning their writing (e.g., providing written guidelines, discussing sample papers before or  after assignments, using peer critiques, holding conferences with students, providing in‑class instruction, indicating strengths and deficiencies in writing, etc.)? Please explain and describe.

 

Your proposal should address these questions. Please attach a syllabus and any other information (i.e., instructional handouts, grading rubrics, assignments, etc.) that will help the members of the committee understand your vision of the course as writing intensive or your methods in teaching such a course.
