Thanks to the Office of Admissions for their generous support of this event, and to all of the participants for making this such a memorable and fun experience. This event is over, but we will be working on plans for a similar workshop for high school students next fall. Please contact Anand Rao (arao AT umw.edu) to receive announcements about future events.
Area high school students are invited to attend the Public Speaking & Advocacy Workshop at UMW on February 1, 2014. This workshop is intended for talented and hard working students, like those involved in their high school’s debate, Model UN, or Commonwealth Governor’s School programs. During this full-day workshop we will discuss effective delivery skills, how to handle stage fright, and introduce a model for advocacy and argumentation. Students should bring a 3-4 minute speech advocating some policy (topic of their choice- feel free to bring along a speech used in class, Model UN, or debate) that they will present in small groups where they will receive feedback from one of our instructors or Speaking Center consultants.
This workshop is co-sponsored by the UMW Speaking Center and the Office of Admissions. There is no fee to participate, and lunch will be provided to registered participants (thanks to Admissions). Sign up with the form below- you will receive confirmation before the workshop. Registration will start at 8:30am, with the first sessions scheduled for 9am. The workshop will end by 4pm. Registered participants will be contacted with the location and further information. Space is limited to the first 75 students, so be sure to register soon (see below).
