Fall 2015 Workshops
The Speaking Center will offer the following workshops for UMW students:
Speaking Anxiety- Thursday, September 3
The majority of people have apprehension towards public speaking. This workshop will discuss the ways in which speaking anxiety manifests itself for different people and methods for combating anxiety. Tips and tricks for in-class presentations will be covered as well as ways to prepare in advance for public speaking.
Class Discussion- Monday, September 14
The class discussion workshop will emphasize best techniques for students to create a successful discussion environment. Topics will range from discussion apprehension to preparing for a discussion and how best to keep a discussion flowing and on topic.
Speech Basics- Wednesday, September 30
This workshop will go over the basics of public speaking, including types of speeches, structure, delivery, and speaking anxiety. Never given a speech in college before? Think you could use a little help writing and presenting your speech? This is the workshop for you!
Visual Aids- Tuesday, October 27
Visual Aids can be the most effective communication tool in your presentation, or they can be a distraction that stands in the way of delivering your message in a clear and productive manner. This workshop will provide a brief guide to the Do’s and Don’ts of Visual Aids and experience in correcting common and uncommon problems in many presentation formats including PowerPoint and Prezi.
Papers to Presentations- Thursday, November 12
Have a paper that you need to present? Not sure how you’re going to fit weeks of research and a 12 page paper into a 6 minute speech? Join a few cross-trained consultants from the speaking and writing centers for tips and tricks on turning your paper into a presentation! Come with your paper and we can help get you started!
Each student-led session will take place in ITCC 327 at 5:00pm, and includes refreshments.
