About the Program

The Rappahannock Scholars Program is a unique model for college pathway programs. Students are provisionally accepted into the university through programs at six partner high schools. They participate in monthly lessons and off-campus activities that prepare them to apply and attend the four-year college of their choice. Should they desire to attend Mary Washington and meet the program standards, they are offered either full scholarships or assistance meeting their demonstrated need. For most students this is the entire cost of attendance.

Seniors who elect to attend UMW continue to receive the support they need to complete college successfully. This includes regular meetings with the program’s director, monthly meetings with all campus Scholars, field trips, assistance with course scheduling and financial aid, and emotional support.

This unique model of grade 9-12 and college support helps create a college-going culture in member schools and raises the profile of UMW and higher ed in general in the student’s home communities.
