The University of Mary Washington’s Quality Enhancement Plan has been designed to help improve our First-Year Seminar, producing better researchers, writers, and speakers.
Welcome to the website for the University of Mary Washington’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), or First-Year Seminar Program — UMW’s First-Year Seminar: Research, Write, Speak. Colleges and universities are evaluated every 10 years for reaffirmation of their accreditation. The organization that evaluates UMW is SACS-COC, or the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools — Commission on Colleges. SACS-COC and accreditation processes are described here. Our SACS on-site visit was successfully held April 15–17, 2013, and implementation of the QEP began in the spring of 2014.
The QEP is a fundamental requirement of reaffirmation—it is “the component of the reaffirmation process that reflects and affirms the commitment of the Commission on Colleges to enhancing the quality of higher education in the region and to focusing attention on student learning. By definition, the QEP describes a carefully designed course of action that addresses a well-defined and focused topic or issue related to enhancing student learning. The QEP should be embedded within the institution’s ongoing integrated institution-wide planning and evaluation process and may very well evolve from this existing process or from other processes related to the institution’s internal reaffirmation review.”
In addition to being UMW’s Quality Enhancement Plan, the First-Year Seminar Program is also the cornerstone of UMW’s First-Year Experience—an immersive program for all first-time UMW students that is designed to support their transition to university life and engage them with everything the university has to offer. For more information about the First-Year Experience and its various components, visit the First-Year Experience site.
If you have questions or concerns related to the QEP, please contact the QEP Office.
