UMW Faculty-Led Programs

Students should first consider a UMW Faculty-Led Programs, as they are tied to disciplines offered at UMW and students can earn either UMW credit for course work or transfer credit. UMW faculty offer exciting summer, spring, and winter break programs throughout the year that vary in length from one week to six-weeks. While covering a wide array of topics, program options may change from year to year.

To learn more about UMW Faculty-Led Programs, students are also encouraged to contact the program faculty member directly. Non-UMW students are also welcome to participate on the UMW Faculty-Led programs.

Scholarships are available to UMW students for faculty-led programs, and the application deadlines will be finalized by September.

UMW in Spain “Spain for All” (Spanish Language & Interdisciplinary Studies) — Registration is OPEN for Summer 2012

Dr. Jose Sainz leads this program at the Universidad de Deusto in Bilbao, a bustling, friendly, and beautiful city in the Basque country on the coast of northern Spain. The University of Deusto is located in the heart of the city. This year Deusto is offering students a unique experience focusing on either an Intensive Spanish Course or interdisciplinary studies programs in a variety of subjects. The program runs for four and a half weeks during the summer, including the opportunity to visit some of Spain’s most beautiful cities and attend cultural events.   Students may earn up to nine transfer credits. UMW in Cambodia “Cambodian Field Study”(Geography) – Registration is OPEN for Winter Break 2012-13

Professor Donald Rallis will lead a group of students to explore the culture and heritage of Cambodia with visits to Phnom Pehn, Sihanoukville, and the famous Angkor Wat, plus a home-stay on a rice farm. Small group size allows for significant cultural immersion during this three week course that takes place over winter break. Program dates are December 12, 2012 to January 9, 2013. UMW Honduras “La Ceiba Project” (Economics) – Winter Break 2013

Visit the economic development project at La Ceiba, Honduras with Dr. Sean Humphrey of the UMW Economics Department. La Ceiba is designed to promote the growth of small businesses in the communities of Siete de Abril and Via Soleada. This one-week program focuses on micro-finance and takes place during Spring Break. It is open to students enrolled in ECON 490A: Helping Honduras. UMW in Guatemala “Grass-Roots Development” (Geography) – Registration is OPEN for Spring Break 2013

The focus of this spring break trip is community cloud forest conservation, ecological understanding,  traditional Maya ecological practices, and innovative agro-ecological techniques. These initiatives can address social needs, create economic opportunity, and build food security. Led by Dr. Dawn Bowen, students will spend two nights spent with Q’eqchi’ Maya host families and one night with young Q’eqchi’ women who are recipients of agro-ecology scholarships at a new agro-ecology center. UMW in Spain “Urban Planning Abroad” (Geography) – Registration is OPEN for Spring Break 2013

Led by Professor Jeffrey Walker, investigate the urban planning and architecture of two of Spain’s incomparable autonomous regions. Revel in excursions to the historic medieval city of Toledo and the spectacular Monasterio de Montserrat. Experience abundant Spanish history, culture, and cuisine. Take in the atmosphere in Madrid’s Plaza Mayor, explore the renowned Prado museum, and browse for finds at the Sunday El Rastro flea market. Tour architectural masterpieces and enhance your understanding of the worldwide planning profession, with an inside glimpse at Spain’s urban and regional planning practices. UMW in Bath, England “In the Steps of Tolkien and Lewis” (English) – Registration is now OPEN for Summer 2013

Dr. Warren Rochelle teaches a seminar during this program offered by Advanced Studies in England, located in the historic town of Bath (an hour and a half’s train ride from London). With field trips to Stonehenge, Oxford, and Birmingham, students really will walk in the footsteps of these two literary giants. In addition to Dr. Rochelle’s “Tolkien, Lewis, and Anglo-American Fantasy” course, students will round out their summer study schedules with either “Triumph of Georgian Bath” or “Jane Austen in Bath.”  This five-week program runs from June 8 to July 13. UMW in London, England “Plays and Performances” (Theatre) – Summer 2013

Led by Dr. Helen Housley and Professor Cate Brewer of UMW’s Department of Theatre and Dance, this program is full of exciting opportunities for exposure to theatre. Visit Stratford-upon-Avon, birthplace of William Shakespeare. Tour the National Theater’s backstage, and see a performance at the famous Globe Theater. Attend a West End Theatre performance and visit with local touring companies, then immerse yourself in local color on a London sight-seeing tour.
