Announcing MediaCore

The Division of Teaching and Learning Technologies is pleased to announce that it has partnered with MediaCore to run a pilot installation of their media platform. MediaCore will give members of the UMW community the ability to control and curate their own media collections. It will be more than just a “campus YouTube”. Students having their own media space is crucial for their experimentation and expression (kind of like “Domain of One’s Own“). What better way to do it than within an educational context and a platform that is specifically geared toward educational media hosting. MediaCore will serve that function and allow students to share their media work locally behind a login, or make their work public when they want/need to. The other idea behind using MediaCore is the idea of curating “collections”. Youtube, Vimeo, and even content from TED Talks and Archive.org can be curated by a user to share unique combinations of media elements. It allows the viewer to go to one place … [Read more...]

The Up Series

“Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man” – attributed to Francis Xavier, the co-founder of the Jesuit Order I’m thinking a lot about documentaries lately. I’ve got no less than two classes working on them this semester. I took great pleasure in producing (a short) one last semester for an EDUCAUSE focus session that featured my colleagues at UMW, along with other faculty, staff, and students. I’m also working on a resource to help students create them, so in turn I’m thinking about some of the greatest documentaries ever made. The above quote, supposedly from Francis Xavier of Jesuit fame, is the framing of what is collectively known as the Up Series. Michael Apted was a researcher on the first film of the series, Seven Up, which began to tell the story of a group of children all at the age of 7 years old. The series begins by asking the children some different questions about their lives, their dreams, the opposite sex, … [Read more...]

On Making Me Feel Valuable

Photo by Fastfoodweblog.nl Sometimes it’s a string of things that I see posted on the web over time that coalesces into a darn good feeling. The first is a quote from Alan Levine’s blog about his current state of mind before a big conference. Oh well, the brain cells are headed towards oatmeal, and I am looking forward to the conference kicking into gear tomorrow. That was me about a month ago, feeling like my feet were moving but I wasn’t going anywhere. Despite that, Faculty Academy 2006 was a great success. The point of value came as I realize that the “brain like mush” feeling is natural before a big event. I’m glad Alan shared this thought, and I’m very thankful that there is a technology in existence that allows this sharing. I’ve only met Alan once, but I feel like I know him a lot better than one face-to-face meeting could supply. The second thing is a two-fer. A post by my boss (who often reminds me of my value…thanks), and … [Read more...]
