Second Suspension

Students who do not make satisfactory progress while on probation will be suspended/dismissed. As appropriate, a notation of the student’s suspension/dismissal status is entered on the student’s permanent record. A suspended student may not register for any classes at UMW (semester or summer) until his or her term of suspension expires.

Important Things to Know About 2nd Suspension:

  • The length of 2nd Suspension is two semesters.
  • Students who fall into 2nd  Suspension receive a registered letter of notification at the end of the fall and spring terms.

Appeal Information:

A student on second suspension who wishes to re-enroll must appeal, in writing, that he or she desires to return to the University at the conclusion of his or her suspension period. The student’s reinstatement petition must be received in the Office of Academic Services by May 24 at 5 p.m. to be considered for advanced registration for fall semester (or summer session) re-enrollment. Students wishing to appeal suspensions may appeal by submitting the Reinstatement Appeal Form.  Be aware these appeals are reviewed by faculty, administrative faculty, and advisors. Appeals should reflect and represent a well thought out plan for your future with a detailed explanation of the progress you have made or intend to make.

Reinstatement Based on Academic Standing Submission

Students wishing to be reinstated for the coming term must fill out the following information and copy their appeal into this form. When creating an appeal please refer to the helpful suggestions outlined on the Suspension and Probation Guidelines. It is recommended that the appeal and academic plan are typed in a wordprocessing software and reviewed prior to imputing into the submission form.

  • Please be prepared to talk about your previous academic record and the causes for poor performance. Should these causes be personal or external, talk about the steps you are taking to resolve these struggles and how you have navigated successfully since your last course load. What has changed to allow you to succeed academically where you once struggled?
  • Please outline the steps you plan to take to improve your academic performance at UMW. This is to include but not limited to, classes you wish to take or retake, academic goals such as graduation date and declaration of major, and clear analysis of the courses you plan to take in effort achieve academic success at UMW.
